Let’s talk about the Holy Spirit
We have looked at the person of the Holy Spirit.
We have looked at the deity of the Holy Spirit, today we are going to look at the work of the Holy Spirit.
Work of Holy Spirit as manifested in history
Work of Holy Spirit as demonstrated through revelation and a part of Gods redemption story.
I. His work in creation
From the beginning the Holy Spirit has been at work.
He was there, involved in creation of the universe (Gen1:2; Ps104:30; Job26:13)
God used the Spirit to help create the universe
Then you can add what the Psalmist acknowledged
He was there (implied) in beginning with Christ (Jn1:1-3; Col1:16)
(stop here, briefly, expand on the implication; refer back to Gen1:2)
Well, had to throw this one in, just because it fits with creation and it is just a great verse!
Involved in creation of man (Gen1:26-27; Job33:4)
Oh, then look at what Job had to say, can we do the same?
(expand on that, it is more than saying, it is believing in your core)
From the very beginning the Spirit was at work.
His work continued as God’s grand plan to save sinful man was being slowly revealed.
II.
His work in revelation
The Spirit in creation, the Spirit in revelation and the Spirit in redemption.
Yes, His work continues!
In the Old Testament times the prophets spoke of the Spirit (2Sam23:2; 2Pt1:20-21)
The Spirit spoke, and put words in the mouths of the prophets.
They at that time were forthtelling and foretelling.
They spoke the words of God as given by God through the Spirit to man for man!
I mentioned foretelling so here is a scripture to back that up
In the Old Testament times the Spirit testified through the prophets of the things to come (1Pt1:10-11)
In the New Testament times the Spirit was a guide (Jn16:12-13; Jn14:26)
The Spirit who was to remind, to teach, to guide the apostles into all truth, and Jesus is truth (think of Jn14:6) and they were to lead all people there, all because the Spirit was in them and worked through them.
In the New Testament the Spirit did as said (1Cor2:10-13; 1Tim4:1-3)
Are we thankful for the Spirit of God and His work through the Apostles that lead us to the redemption that we have today?
The same Spirit works in us and through us to lead others to the Truth and the freedom that is available.
We see the Spirits work of revelation and now we can know and look at the Spirits work in confirmation!
III His work in confirmation
The working Spirit who was from the beginning continued to work in and through the Apostles so the Word of God that was being revealed was being confirmed.
The Spirit confirms Jesus as the Christ
Through the miracles (Act2:22)
Why were the miracles done?
To prove Jesus is the Christ.
What was the power used?
It was the Spirit of God that worked in and through Jesus.
And with Christ to confirm His work (Act10:38; Mt12:28; Lk4:18-21)
Work in and through with power.
That power that cast out demons, not only that, but to prove that the Kingdom promised, is a kingdom come with a kingdom to come.
The Spirit that work in the Lord and through the Lord fulfilling the prophesy given to Isaiah!
Not only that, then the Spirit:
The Spirit confirms the Apostles (Heb2:3-4; Rom15:19)
Gifts given to do signs and wonders to prove that what they said was true.
Gifts given by the Spirit Himself, the Spirits part in the redemption story.
The redemption story that was carried to all!
From near to far, may we too be willing to share the redemption story that includes the spirit by near and far.
Next door or the next town, let the Spirit have His way through you.
God’s Word, through the Spirit revealed and confirmed.
God’s Spirit who was a person and is personable, God’s Spirit who is deity, God’s Spirit who is at work still today in God’s grand plan (redemption!).
IV.
His work in regeneration
The work of regeneration is a part of the Spirits work, it comes with the power of the Word preached and the response to the Word.
Work in regeneration as the Word is preached (Jn16:7-8; Act2:4; Act2:22-24; Act2:36-41)
The Spirit that came to work, to convict the world of sin.
But that was not all, look again at the passage, also righteousness and judgment.
Sin brings judgment, but the Spirit is for those who are Jesus who is righteous so we can become righteous because of the work of the Spirit in us.
The Spirit filled and spoke through the Apostles so we can have the regeneration we have today.
As exampled in Peters preaching of the Christ (Act2:22-24, 36)
The preaching that lead to pricked hearts (Act2:37) and the call to be obedient (Act2:38) and look at the results
The Spirit convicts and is there for conversion all because of the Word preached (expand on that briefly)
Work in regeneration as the Word is obeyed (Act2:38-41; Tit3:5-7; 1Cor6:11; Jn3:3-5)
When convicted it leads to conversion (Act2:38-41): and that is the reeneration
Regeneration, renewing by the Spirit that was given, who now works in the heart of the believer!
and gives the believer hope!
Hope of eternal life.
Not only regeneration, we are being sanctified because we were justified in the name of Jesus when we were transferred into His possession.
That happens when we are born again, of water and spirit.
The Spirits work in regeneration in response to the the Word obeyed, it is not the start, but it is not the finish either.
The Spirit continues to work in the heart and the life of the believer today.
V. His work in sanctification
From the beginning until the end, He continues to work, from creation, to new creation, to transformation to confirmation when we hear that final “well done, good and faithful servant. . .
The Spirits work in our initial sanctification (1Cor6:11; 2The2:13)
The sanctification is the being set apart, being consecrated for the Lord and by the Lord through the Spirit.
The spirit is the instrument that God uses.
Our washing, our regeneration, our rebirth, our justification and now our sanctification all at the hands of the Spirit of God.
The sanctification is an ongoing process, an ongoing work, since we are talking about the work of the Spirit today.
The Spirits work in our ongoing sanctification (Heb2:11; Heb10:14; Heb10:10; 1The4:3-4; 1The5:23)
Sanctification is a process not an event, it happens overtime not overnight
Sanctified into one family with one Father, and the One Son is not ashamed to call us brethren.
He has perfected us in the spirit sense hasn’t He?
For the sin problem has been dealt with.
His work continues in us to help us regarding holy living
add to that another scripture
Spirits work in our holy living (Eph3:14; Eph3:20; Rom8:11-13; Gal5:16-18)
Because of the work that happens in the believer, Paul bowed his knee, may we be willing to do that say.
Because the God who works through the Spirit works in us!
Yep, that Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead, raised you, or can raise you if that has not happen yet.
So then you can walk in the Spirit
By putting to death the things of the flesh that are against the Spirit.
Freeing you from the law and the curse of the law, to have the freedom in Christ.
(Lead to invitation)
Spirit who was there for creation, was then a part of the revelation, who was the confirmation of the Christ and the Apostles, is part of your regeneration and your sanctification.
Are you allowing the Spirit to work in you?
Do you have the Spirit in you?
