Introduction:
Some of the greatest tragedies in life come from false assumptions.
There have been so many sitcoms based on the the premise of false assumptions.
For you old guys Three’s Company was all based on false assumptions. Someone would overhear something but it was not in the right context and they would begin to make decisions on those false assumptions.
Friends was another sitcom where it seamed every episode was based on a false assumption or even a lie and their world gets crazy because everyone is working from bad information.
What makes something funny is its basis in reality. The truth is we work off of false assumption or lies all the time.
People tell you have truths or you only see half the picture and you begin making assumptions and decisions based on this false information.
What if that were truth in your Spiritual life as well. People base their entire existence on the truths that they believe about God, the universe, and the afterlife.
If these truths are going to be where all the decisions of your life are going to stem from don’t you think it would be important to get those right.
Unlike a sitcom Life doesn’t always work out in the end with a good laugh and a huge. Relationships are broken or destroyed. Some decisions are made that cannot be unmade.
When I as a preacher stand in front of you and ask you be base your life on these truths and make passionate decisions for your life, It better be based in truth and honesty.
As we continue in we are going to get some insight into the false assumptions that people are living in everyday that cause so many life tragedies. I don’t think there is any more applicable chapter in the Bible for our generation than .
Bible Lesson:
Last week we saw the power that the gospel has to bring salvation to the world and change lives.
Romans 1:16 ESV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

God’s revelation of righteousness demands His wrath on unrighteousness.

Nobody likes to talk about wrath because they don’t understand it. We don’t like to think of a God that would have wrath on people because we are afraid that might mean us as well.
Let’s see if we can understand why God would take out wrath on his creation
Romans 1:18 ESV
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Romans 1:19 ESV
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.

God has placed a witness in creation that no man can mess with.

Romans 1:19–20 ESV
19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Romans 1:19 ESV
19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
We live in the revelation of God every day by power and nature that we don’t fully understand.
This is an undeniable truth that causes men to be without excuse.
This is the reason creation is constantly under attack.
If an explanation for creation can be found other than God it would remove the excuse.
Ps 19:1
Psalm 19:1 ESV
1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

God’s love relationship with man started at creation.

Romans 1:21 ESV
21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Romans 1:20 ESV
20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Rom 1:221
The Rejection of God’s relationship:
Dishonoring God is to put him on the same level as man.
This was the lie in the garden to Adam and Eve
You can be like God.
Genesis 3:5 ESV
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Genesis 3:5 ESV
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Gen 3:
Unthankfulness to God is to think you can live without him.
The very fabric of life is held together by the grace, mercy, and goodness of God.
When I decided to leave home when I was 12.
I was mad at my Mom so I said, “I’m out of here.”
Mom said, “Well go then. Nobody’s stopping you.”
I gather up so clothes in my hand (that I didn’t buy) and started down the street.
I can still remember looking down the street and saying to myself, “Where am I going to go? What am I going to eat? What if it rains? Who’s going to provide for me? Who’s going to protect me?” There were to many unanswered questions.
I quickly turned around went in the house and went to my room.
I had become unthankful for all the provision that my family provided.
I thought I could do it myself. But I was dead wrong.
The Rejection of God’s truth:
Psalm 107:1 ESV
1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!
Ps 107:
Psalm 7:17 ESV
17 I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.
Psalm 9:1 ESV
1 I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
The Rejection of God’s truth:
Romans 1:21 ESV
21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
rom 1:
Vanity leads to selfish thinking.
Foolishness now rules the heart. Foolishness is to deny a know truth.
Romans 1:22–23 ESV
22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Rom 1:
Psalm 53:1 ESV
1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good.
When you reject the wisdom of God you are left with what you can think up.
Foolishness now rules the heart. Foolishness is to deny a know truth.
Psalm 53:1 ESV
1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good.
Foolishness now rules the heart. Foolishness is to deny a know truth.

The lust of a man’s heart always leads

P
In the next verses we will see 3 phases of man’s lack of honor and thanksgiving of the Lord.

Phase 1: The lust of a man’s heart leads to self-worship.

Romans 1:24–25 ESV
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
rom 1:24
Sin has caused us to be selfish by nature. We have come to the conclusion that life is for our good pleasure and for our glory. This is a false presupposition, a false starting point that causes us to be mislead in all things.

3 Lust of the Heart

1 John 2:15–16 ESV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
1 John 2:15-16
Desires of the Flesh
Desires of the Eyes
Pride of Life

We dishonor God with our selfish acts of lust.

Phase 2: Self-worship leads to dishonorable actions and passions against God.

Rom 1:26
Romans 1:26–27 ESV
26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

God has set a natural order to things.

Men were created with certain parts and women were created with complementary parts.
It is foolishness to think that think these parts are made function any other way than what God has intended.

We dishonor God when we go contrary to his purpose and nature.

Sex is the most relational act that you can perform between to people.
Which is why it is reserved by God for a husband and wife relationship only. Proper passions between a husband and wife are very honoring to God, because that is exactly the joy, pleasure, and relationship that He created it to be.
When we go against the natural order, whether that be heterosexual or homosexual, it is dishonoring to God because it is not what he intended.

When we go against God design there are penalties for our actions.

Phase 3: Dishonorable passions lead to a debased mind.

Romans 1:28–29 ESV
28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips,
Rom
Romans 1:30–31 ESV
30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

When you refuse to be filled with wisdom and knowledge of God you are left with the foolish wisdom of the world.

James 3:13–16 ESV
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.
James 3:13
Earthly - corrupt (under the curse)
Unspiritual - Not of God
Demonic - The works of Satan (Anti-God)
James 3:17 ESV
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
James 3:17
God’s wisdom is never fueled by hatred but by love.
God’s wisdom produces peace.

People who live dishonoring to God feel justified when other dishonor God.

Romans 1:32 ESV
32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
True love never leads to dishonoring God.
Misery loves company
“Are you to good to drink with us.”
“Take a hit. You don’t know what your missing.”
“It’s just sex. It doesn’t mean anything.”
This message is not a warning against:
Dishonoring God through self-worship
Dishonoring God through our action and passions
Dishonoring God through a debased mind.
If you don’t know it already, we are already there.
So what can we do to change it? How do we get back to a good place with God?
This is the very reason for the redemptive work of Christ.

4 Steps Back to God

Worship and serve the Creator and not His creation.
Ask for forgiveness and receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
Acknowledge He is God and you are not.
Start worshiping the Creator and not you the creature.
Honor the Lord with thanksgiving.
Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Prov 3:
Proverbs 3:7–8 ESV
7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.
Prov 3:5
Ps
Psalm 107:1 ESV
1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!
Psalm 7:17 ESV
17 I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.
Ps
Psalm 9:1 ESV
1 I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
3. Renew your mind through the power of God’s Word.
Romans 12:2 ESV
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Psalm 119:105 ESV
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:11 ESV
11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Ps 119:
4. Walk in the newness of Christ.
Ephesians 4:17–24 ESV
17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Eph 4:17-
