Hallowed be your name.
Hallowed be your name.
What is he doing here?
I’ve heard a lot of preachers attribute this phrase here to praise.
That he is saying words of praise to the Father.
in fact we see this in the Psalms. David praises God for the quality of His name.
He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name.
Psalm 11:
Davids praises Him for the awesomeness of His name and the Holiness of His name.
So if it were merely praise, we would expect to see “Holy is your name.”
And though of course he is saying that, and though of course, God should be praised for the greatness of His name, i think there is more going on here than just that. If were just that, it would be translated that way.
But its translated differently.
Why is not translated holy is your name?
Because that would praise. To say to God: “Holy is your name” is a recognition of of His character, and thus is praise. Certainly that is happening here. There is praise going on.
However, this more than just praise when we say the phrase “Hallowed be your name.” This is an action word.
This is why any good translation will translate this phrase as an action.
“Hallowed be”
What we are saying is:
God you Make your name holy.
Jesus is praying to the Father, and he calls upon God to make His name holy.
What does he mean by this?
How will God make His name Holy?
Turn with me to 16-23
And God has said he will do this before.
“I will vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord,” declares the Lord God, “when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight.
“When they came to the nations where they went, they profaned My holy name, because it was said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord; yet they have come out of His land.’ “But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations where they went. “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went. “I will vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord,” declares the Lord God, “when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight.
Ezekial 36:20-23
You see the pattern
Sin - Wrath - Judgment
The people sinned.
God poured out His wrath on them.
But why?
look at verse 20.
Because it was said of them.
“These are the people of the Lord.”
But the way they have lived has profaned his name.
They have brought dishonor to his name.
Imagine a wife constantly running around on her husband. think of the dishonor she bring to her husband.
This is what Israel is compared to often in the Old Testament.
but God is Going to do something for his name.
verse 22.
He is going to vindicate His name.
He does this by cleansing His people, gathering them to Himself, and putting His spirit within them
So essentially, When We pray this, we are praying the will of God.
God is the one doing the action of making his name Holy.
And this prayer is calling upon him to do just that.,
Now what should be our response?
We strive to live according to the name we bear.
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
Exodus
You shall not carry the name of the Lord in vain.
This is what Israel has done over and over.
They wear His name, and they profane it through their actions.
Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.”
We live holy lives. Taking our sin seriously. We are the bride of Christ.
Realize everything we do, we do wearing the name of Jesus.
We are His. We wear His name.
That’s got to be at least a contact for our obedience.
Do you view your life as bearing Jesus’s name.
but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
We pray and ask God like Jesus does here.
Hallowed be your name.
May your name be counted as holy in me…in our church… in our world....Lord you have declared it. May you do it.
