Think Small in Ambition

The point Jesus makes to His disciples about who is going to be the highest rank is that they have to think small. They have to think small about whom Jesus loves. They have to think small about being great. They have to think small about themselves. To be great in the kingdom of God, we have to think small financially. to be great in the kingdom of God, we have to think small driving.
If you need some help thinking small, consider these points:
What can you do combining all of your abilities to atone for a single sin? The answer is nothing. You are too small.
How many stars can you speak into existence by your abilities? The correct answer is none. You are too small.
Compare your expected lifespan on earth to eternity. Life is but a vapor, and life apart from life in Christ is vanity, meaningless.
Think small about your usefulness to God. The problem with some church members and even some pastors is that they think they are so important to the work of God. Of course, some do important work and impressive work, but the ones who do works that will have lasting value are those who think small of themselves.
A pastor was building a wooden trellis in his backyard. As he worked, he noticed a neighborhood boy watching him. The boy said nothing; he just leaned against the wall and watched. The pastor kept at it, thinking the kid would get bored and leave, but he didn’t. Finally, the pastor set his hammer down and asked, “So, are you just trying to get some gardening tips?” The boy answered, “Nope. I’m just waiting to hear what a preacher says when he hits his thumb with a hammer.”

The story is told of a laborer who was a mature Christian and gave a solid testimony before all who knew him. His boss came to him one day and said, “You know, whatever you’ve got, I want. You have such peace and joy and contentment. How can I get this?”

The laborer said, “Go to your home, put on your best suit, come down here, and work in the mud with the rest of us—and you can have it.”

“What are you talking about? I could never do that. I’m the boss, you’re the worker. I can’t do that. That’s beneath my dignity.” The boss came back a couple of months later and said, “I ask you again, what is it that you have and how can I get it?”

“I told you, go put on your best suit, come down and work in the mud with us, and you can have it.” Again the boss became furious and walked off.

Finally, in desperation he came back to the laborer and said, “I don’t care what it takes! I’ll do anything.” The laborer said, “Will you put on your best suit and come down and work in the mud?” The boss agreed that he would do even that. Then the laborer said, “You don’t have to.”

Do you see the point? The laborer knew what was standing between the boss and Christ—pride and self.1087

When asked what is the secret of a long and happy life, the Duchess of Windsor responded, “Fill what’s empty, empty what’s full, and scratch where it itches.”
