Raiders of the Lost Ark—rope motif happens three times
Mission Impossible—drama of motif
In movie making and storytelling in general the motif and drama of lowering a character into a pit or a room by a rope is used to create tension
Both the one holding the rope and the one being lowered into the pit or room on the other end of the rope are important.
William Carey
First missionary to India, back in 1792 before movies…mining, said to his friends…
“I will go down, if you will hold the rope.”
~William Carey, Missionary to India, 1792
Father of modern missions…this wasn’t the way missions were historically viewed—to have senders and goers.
There were just weird crazy missionaries who would go without anyone holding the other end of the rope.
But Carey said that isn’t biblical.
Father of modern missions…this wasn’t the way missions were viewed.
Jesus says in , there are goers and senders.
Not just goers.
Not just those who go on the trip but those who send.
So the one holding the rope is the sender and the one being lowered into the pit is the goer.
Carey said I will go down, if you will hold the rope.
Carey’s friend John Ryland said, “He took an oath from each of us, at the mouth of the pit, to this effect, that ‘while we lived, we should never let go of the rope”.
In verse 18, Jesus says there are senders and goers.
as I have been sent I now send you.
Are you sending or going?
Are you holding the rope or being lowered into the pit on the rope?
The word send from the Latin literally means mission.
Jesus is saying I was sent on mission and now I am sending you on mission.
And your mission is the same as my mission.
And what was his mission?
Verse 17--
John
To spread truth.
Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life.
Are you sending or going?
Are you holding the rope or being lowered into the pit on the rope?

The team that went to Kenya dropped into the mines…and those of us back home held onto the rope.

-Care for them
-Write them letters, be pen pals
-tolerate their slide show when they come home, let them stay in your house
-mostly, send money and shut up
All well and good, but...
Not What it Means
That isn’t at all what it means to hold the rope back home.
Not at all what it means to send.
In verse 18, the word send literally means mission.
Sending is to be part of the mission.

He’s right.
How sad.
And he says and the irony is we have the best story.
We offer the most hope.

“Missions exists because worship does not.”
~John Piper
In other words, missions is not the ultimate goal of the church.
Worship is the ultimate goal.

A person sending, a person holding onto the one crucial end of the rope is a good rope holder not primarily when they write letters to the missionaries or like their facebook statuses, or even send money, but when they have a consuming passion for Nothing But Jesus.
I believe that is why we are seeing so many missions opportunities here at Reach Church.
I believe that is why God is opening up so many doors to missions for Reach Church.
