John 17:13–19 ESV
But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
Raiders of the Lost Ark—rope motif happens three times
Mission Impossible—drama of motif
In movie making and storytelling in general the motif and drama of lowering a character into a pit or a room by a rope is used to create tension
Both the one holding the rope and the one being lowered into the pit or room on the other end of the rope are important.
William Carey
First missionary to India, back in 1792 before movies…mining, said to his friends…

“I will go down, if you will hold the rope.” ~William Carey, Missionary to India, 1792

Father of modern missions…this wasn’t the way missions were historically viewed—to have senders and goers. There were just weird crazy missionaries who would go without anyone holding the other end of the rope. But Carey said that isn’t biblical.
Father of modern missions…this wasn’t the way missions were viewed.
Jesus says in , there are goers and senders. Not just goers. Not just those who go on the trip but those who send. So the one holding the rope is the sender and the one being lowered into the pit is the goer.
Carey said I will go down, if you will hold the rope.
Carey’s friend John Ryland said, “He took an oath from each of us, at the mouth of the pit, to this effect, that ‘while we lived, we should never let go of the rope”.
In verse 18, Jesus says there are senders and goers.
John 17:18 ESV
As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.
as I have been sent I now send you.
Are you sending or going? Are you holding the rope or being lowered into the pit on the rope?
John 17:16 ESV
They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
The word send from the Latin literally means mission. Jesus is saying I was sent on mission and now I am sending you on mission. And your mission is the same as my mission. And what was his mission? Verse 17--
John 17:15 ESV
I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.
John 17:17 ESV
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
John
To spread truth. Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life.
Are you sending or going? Are you holding the rope or being lowered into the pit on the rope?
Kenya Team
The team that went to Kenya dropped into the mines…and those of us back home held onto the rope.
Typical missions sermon on holding the rope, on being good rope holders…
-Pray
-Care for them
-Write them letters, be pen pals
-tolerate their slide show when they come home, let them stay in your house
-mostly, send money and shut up
All well and good, but...
Not What it Means
That isn’t at all what it means to hold the rope back home.
Not at all what it means to send.
In verse 18, the word send literally means mission. Sending is to be part of the mission.
John 17:17 ESV
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
To be part of mission.
What is the mission? NBJ. Verse 17--
John 17:17 ESV
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
TRUTH
Truth is the mission.
Rekindled fascination with truth. Hours long Podcasts. Jordan Peterson. College students. Lectures on Bible.
Non Christians here. Are you people nuts?
The whole point is a search for truth. The question Pilate asked Jesus, what is truth.
One of the things Jordan Peterson says is that conservative Christians, especially the brand caught up in God and Country and politics and those not really into Jesus, are really not a concern. He’s right. How sad. And he says and the irony is we have the best story. We offer the most hope. Now he doesn’t take it all the way. He doesn’t say Jesus is the only right way.
Non Christians here—are you people nuts? But you are thirsty for the truth.
Jesus—way truth and life. Exclusivity of Jesus.
Acts 4:12 ESV
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12 ESV
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
A sending church, those holding the rope back home are good rope holders when they have a white hot passion for worshiping Jesus.
That’s the whole ball game. That’s not loving. Why are you Christians so narrow?
Sick person analogy
CS Lewis—liar, lunatic, or Lord. No middle ground when it comes to truth. Jesus is the whole ball game. The central point of the Christian faith.
A sending church, those holding the rope back home are good rope holders when they have a white hot passion for worshiping Jesus.
A sending church, those holding the rope back home are good rope holders when they have a white hot passion for worshiping Jesus.

“Missions exists because worship does not.” ~John Piper

John 17:18 ESV
As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.
In other words, missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is the ultimate goal. Missions exists because worship doesn't. Worship of Jesus is ultimate.
When he says worship he isn’t speaking just of music but a heart of worship, a heart that is so gripped by Jesus that this worship flows into every part of the person.
Send=Mission
The word send from the Latin literally means mission. Jesus is saying I was sent on mission and now I am sending you on mission. And your mission is the same as my mission. And what was his mission? Verse 17--
Reach Church Missions=NBJ at Home
A person sending, a person holding onto the one crucial end of the rope is a good rope holder not primarily when they write letters to the missionaries or like their facebook statuses, or even send money, but when they have a consuming passion for Nothing But Jesus. I believe that is why we are seeing so many missions opportunities here at Reach Church. I believe that is why God is opening up so many doors to missions for Reach Church.
Not because we have some big missions conference or a bulletin board somewhere or a missions committee, not because we make sure the missionary feels important when they come home, but because of a burning passion 365 days of the year to worship Jesus.
That it isn’t ok with us that there are places where worship of Jesus isn’t happening. That there are corners of the world where Jesus isn’t being made famous, where Jesus isn’t being worshiped…that we believe so much in our message of NBJ that we can’t help but hold the rope, we can’t help but send and be on mission.
Missions exists because worship doesn’t.
China-Famous One
I have been to many different countries on mission trips. When I was in China I found those in the underground house church movement to be so much on fire for Jesus, so passionate about their faith, that I wondered why Americans needed to be there at all. Until one day, I visited a buddhist temple. At the temple, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year, there are monks worshiping buddha. Going through liturgical rituals with incense, prayers, chants. I had found a corner of the world where Jesus was absent. It wasn’t just the temple it was the surrounding area. There was a darkness that you could feel. It was a heaviness. As I was walking along the village street road in an open market place, there was a stone shop where they carved art into stone and sold these pieces. There was a young man chiseling into the stone, but it wasn’t the chiseling that caught my attention, it was the worship music he had playing through a little portable CD player. The song was in English and the lyrics were
You are the Lord The famous One, famous One Great is Your Name in all the earth The heavens declare You're glorious, glorious Great is Your fame beyond the earth
Desire of nations and every heart You alone are God, You alone are God
This was an area of darkness…an area where worship did not exist, but here was a missionary with the desire to make Jesus famous in that dark corner of the Earth.
Acts
Acts 4:12 ESV
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Powells did this. There was nothing there. Babies being literally thrown away. Jesus needs to be made famous here.
And that is what we are called to do at Reach Church. To be rope holders…to send and to go, to find places where worship doesn’t currently exist. To see Jesus become famous in those areas.
Psalm 105:1 ESV
Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!
Isaiah 12:4 ESV
And you will say in that day: “Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted.
And it doesn’t have to be overseas. There are places ten minutes from this church campus that are void of worship. Places where Jesus is not famous at all.
And it seems that God keeps giving Reach Church opportunities. Think about it…not just Kenya…but...
Reach UD
Jesus is not famous at the UD. UD was just ranked the number one party school in the nation. But there is a three story house right on campus. It was occupied by a couple from the Greatest Generation. They weren’t perfect people, in fact, the thing people loved most about the wife was how real she was…but they used their house for ministry, they took in students, they took in troubled teenagers, I know there was always people in that house far from Jesus because that couple are my grandparents. They also built churches. They built this church. They built the building next door. They dedicated their life to making Jesus famous. And now that three story house has been transformed into apartments and Reach Church is partnering with the owners who are giving heavily towards this mission to house 14 UD students in that house so that we have a little army of Reach Church NBJ people right on the campus of UD.
It is no coincidence that Reach Church is going to UD the year that the school is named the number one party school in the nation. Because we will bring the real party. Because being a Christian isn’t a drag. The world needs to experience the radical, freeing, joy filled nature of what it means to be consumed by NBJ.

Filled with frat houses. We are right in the middle of it. We need your help. We need you to be rope holders for those who are being lowered into the pit. It’s great for the kids who are going, but it isn’t going to be easy. We are going to be on mission together. This could be the beginning of something amazing at UD. This could be the beginning of worship happening in more of the hearts of the 25k students at UD. Jesus becoming famous.
The street the house is on is one of the party hubs of the Campus---it’s a bad street when it comes to that. Filled with frat houses. We are right in the middle of it. What if we claimed that street and became a blessing to those neighbors? Worship does not exist on that street, so missions will exist through Reach Church.

Schools
God has brought Reach Church Christian schools. As we have acquired schools run by others, we have discovered that Jesus is absent. Vague God is there. Faith, family and football. But Jesus isn’t. Pepperdine student, TSCA.
VBS and Children
What about your personal life? Where is it that YOU are being lowered into the pit, where is it that YOU are being sent to share NBJ? Or are you on the sidelines? Are you watching others be lowered into the pit by others who are holding the other end of the rope?

Jesus Holds the Rope
Because here is the reality…we think it is us holding onto the rope at both sides, but Jesus is really the one holding onto us. In fact, Jesus is the rope itself.
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
Missions exist because worship does not.
When this age is over, and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, missions will be no more. It is a temporary necessity. But worship abides forever.
Acts 4:12 ESV
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
