The people though they knew where Jesus was from - Nazareth.
But they didn’t know that He had actually come from God.
Jesus knew where He was from, because He knew who He was.
Today, I want to talk about knowing who you are.
It is important that we know that we are children of God.
The are three things I would like to say about that...
We are adopted by God
God has adopted us as his children:
Having a child by birth, and adopting a child have this important difference: adoption is always a choice!
The fact that God has adopted you indicates that you, as an individual, are chosen by God:
Notice that you were chosen before the foundation of the world.
Every Christian to have an awareness that their salvation was not an accident.
God knew you before you were born and chose that you should be saved.
This verse speaks of the past, the present, and the future.
In the eternal past, He foreknew and predestined us.
In the present, He called and justified us.
In the future, He will glorify us (Paul uses the “prophetic perfect”, speaking of a future event as though it were already done because it is certain that God will do it).
The fact that God foreknew does not merely mean that God knew we would exist.
It means that He thought of you in a particular way.
For example, God said to Jeremiah:
When we appreciate the fact that we have been chosen by God from before we were born, we will realise that we too must therefore have a purpose on earth.
We are not just here to pass the time.
God has something for us to do!
We must all walk in our purpose, that is why we are here!
We have God’s nature
We have seen that we are children of God by adoption.
But that doesn’t give the full picture.
In addition to adopting us, God has also birthed us:
Because we are born of God, we have the nature of God in us.
Even as a natural parent and their offspring are biologically connected, so God and his children are spiritually connected.
Even as a parent has a natural love for their child because of that biological connection, God has a “natural” love for us, because we are born of Him.
However, there is an important difference: God’s love for us is even greater than the love a human can have for their child!
Today, I want to remind of the incredible love that God has for you his child:
(Jesus is praying to the Father)
We Carry God’s Name
A child carry’s the name of the their parents.
As God’s children, we carry His name too.
A child’s behaviour can cause people to think well or badly of that child’s parents.
We must remember, that as God’s children, the way we behave, can affect the way people feel about God.
When Paul wrote concerning the ungodly behaviour of the Jews, he said:
In other words, the nations thought and spoke ill of God because of the conduct of His people.
As children of God, we must remember that represent God and His Son Jesus Christ:
“in the name of the Lord Jesus” = representing the Lord Jesus.
Ask yourself - in this action, am I represent Jesus, and can I give God thanks whilst doing it?
Let us remember whose we are, and who we are!
Summary
As God's children:
We are adopted by God, having been chosen by Him.
God has a purpose for our lives
We have God's nature and are loved by God
We carry God's name, and should act accordingly
