Jesus Calls His Shot
insert pic of Steph turning his back to the goal before the ball goes in...
mt 25 31-
Jesus calls his shot like Steph Curry releasing a 3 point shot as it leaves his hands!
Jesus says that on the last day when He returns to this earth ALL NATIONS will be gathered before Him.
Some will be rewarded and some will be punished, but all NATIONS not just Children of Israel will be called His.
ALL PEOPLE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE SAVED.
WE HAVE TO PASS ALONG THE MESSAGE ABOUT HOW GOOD IT IS TO BELONG TO CHRIST.
Last week we learned about the Authority of Jesus and what that meant.
As Christians our response to any authority is to obey.
Jesus was given all authority in heaven and on earth by God.
He commands that we obey Him.
Going back to our text in .
We look at another piece of what we are commissioned to do.
Therefore Go...
Therefore- Because of this...
1. Go therefore-
1. Therefore: The word therefore is important.
It means "because of this" which points to the fact that Jesus has authority.
We covered what the authority of Jesus meant from verse 18 last week in the sermon title The Authority of Jesus.
1.
Because Jesus has authority we need to obey His command.
2. Go: The Greek word means "to move a considerable distance, either with a single destination or from one destination to another in a series—‘to travel, to journey, to be on one’s way.’
1.
I believe that the definition that is applicable to the text is "...from one destination to another in a series..."
2. We cannot be followers of Christ and only congregate!
Example: Going on vacation when I was young meant exploring.
Going to see different things.
Expending a lot of energy.
Going on vacation as you get older means to me relaxing, taking on as little responsibility as possible, and maybe even staying in bed all day!
We have to treat Christianity like going on vacation as young people!
We have to be on the move!
Because of the authority that Jesus has and His interceding on our behalf to the Father in Heaven, our natural response as Christians should be to OBEY.
We need to move from where we are and be about the business of being obedient to Jesus the Christ.
Make Disciples of All Nations...
What is a disciple?
Disciple- a person who learns from another by instruction, whether formal or informal
In context...
Jewish disciples would follow their master around, often literally imitating him.
The goal of Jewish disciples was someday to become masters, or rabbis, themselves, and to have their own disciples who would follow them.
But Jesus’ disciples were to remain disciples of their Master and Teacher, Jesus, and to follow him only.
Following Jesus means togetherness with him and service to him while traveling on the Way.
~Wilkins, M. J. (1996).
Disciple, Discipleship.
In Evangelical dictionary of biblical theology~
We have to figure out a way to make people want to be students of Christ first.
We have to find a way to make them interested in Him.
We have to find a way to make folks want to follow after Him to be like Him.
But how do you get people excited about Jesus and being apart of His kingdom?
But how do you get people excited about Jesus and being apart of His kingdom?
So how do we get people excited about being disciples?
It is not something that you can force people to do.
A better translation of would read like this.
Because I have authority in heaven and earth, while you are going from here to there, convince/urge all people to become like me (Jesus).
BCWST 2018 (Bro.
C.W. Stephens Translation) Mt. 28:19a
Because of this (what is written in verse 18) you all need to leave far from here convincing/urging ALL types of people to become like Jesus.
What would cause people to want to be like a dead man?
“Christian discipleship is about imitating Christ to the degree that your people no longer see you.
They can only see your master.
Part of the reason some may not buy into the God you serve is because they see no difference between you then, and you now.” ~Orpheus Heyward~
How to respond to the call of Discipleship
Recognizing that Jesus is The Christ (He can HELP you!) ()
Obeying His Summons (Leaving former lifestyles behind) ()
Counting the cost of full allegiance (The weight of confession) ()
Losing the old life & finding new life in God's family (Mimic the life of Jesus) ()
All Nations...
All Nations...
Within context Jesus came to minister to the 12 tribes.
He brought together a diverse group of Israelite men into unity over the course of three years.
But their purpose was not to go back to people who were simply like them.
Those men would go and make disciples in other parts of the world!
If each of the 36 adult members of Avenue G Church of Christ were to gather up 3 people to disciple.
Tell them of your story.
How God changed you, how much your brothers and sisters love you, and how much you truly care about the lost in the world we could collectively touch 108 lives!
The Nations Are Counting on You!
jn 9
It doesn’t matter how you got to where you are IN Christ Jesus.
As Christians we know that the change that takes place in us did not happen by our own doing.
We were blind but now we see.
Show someone else the Way!
As a Christian it is your duty and all people rely on you!
