Having seen how Jesus, God the Son, related to us by willingly became nothing, taking on the form of a servant for us, we now continue exploring Philippians by thinking about how we are to relate to God. "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling," Paul tells his readers, "for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose." Just as Jesus obeyed the Father, so we are exhorted to obey God, in the knowledge of all he is and all he has done, a fear and trembling that comes not out of being frightened, but of sheer awe and wonder at the work of God in us and for us, that leaves us holding on to his gospel and rejoicing for the salvation we have been given.
