Verse 16 In the New Living Translation it reads

16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature.

They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.

18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.

I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.

Against such things there is no law.

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.

25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guild your lives.

Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.

Context of the verse:-

5:1 – Freedom in Christ

5:7 – They were running well but who cut in on them

5:13 - Called to be free

Don’t use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature

Rather serve one another in Love

5:14 - The law is summed up in the commandment “love your neighbour as yourself”

5:15 - Disunity will destroy

The Galatian church had moved from the foundation of

Freedom found in Grace and Faith

To a life where they were being

Bound by the regulations of the Law.

They had started well – but now they had become bound by religion again.

Verse 7 in the new living translation

So what does it mean to walk by the spirit?

Walk by the rule of the Holy Spirit.

And when you do you will not be one who gratifies the desires of the sinful nature.

Verse 17

“the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature.

They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.”

The Conflict.

Sinful nature vs the Spirit.

tells us that the flesh and the spirit are in opposition to one another.

tells us that the flesh and the spirit are in opposition to one another.

The flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh.

This is a struggle that happens in every person.

So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.

In someone without the Holy Spirit living within them, the only positive force to oppose the sin nature is our God given conscience.

Without the Holy Spirit, we are in big trouble.

We are fallen, depraved, natural enemies of God and his law written on our hearts

The unbeliever is controlled by the desires of the flesh.

Three Sexual sins:

sexual immorality, impurity (porneia / fornication), and debauchery.

Sexual sins are often placed first in these types of negative lists because of their large impact and immense consequences.

2. Two religious / vertical sins:

idolatry and witchcraft – pharmakeia (often includes idea of drug induced/enhanced trance)
