Disciples Duplicate

This is a very personal passage.

YOU - Timothy.

YOU - Us today by implication.

v. 13 sets it up a comparison.

- “But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.”

As evil continues to go from bad to worse - we must be more and more focused on what we have learned!!

YOU - continue in what you have learned and become convinced of!

he says YOU - continue in what you have learned and become convinced of!

How did Timothy learn and become convinced?

The word WHOM in Verse 14 is a reminder of , “For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.”

and , “Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.”

for Timothy that he needs to remember and lean into the training and beliefs that his grandmother and mother and Paul taught him.

And so must we.

Who were those that taught you the faith?

Parents, take your place in the circle of discipleship.

It is time to realize that no one - I mean no one can do this for you.

Without meaning to, we have adopted the model that the church fuels the family - but it is really that Godly Families Fuel the Thriving Church.

Let’s take stock for a moment of our families and our church:

And so must we.

Let’s take stock for a moment of our families and our church:

Families:

Are the family altars lit?

Do you study the scriptures in some way with your family or spouse?

We need to be teaching our children.

It is completely out of bounds for Parents to consistently drop off children without being involved in Bible Study themselves.

Do you pray together?

doing this over meals is great, but at other times when you get news of trial and tragedy OR Celebration.

Are God’s people praying in the good times and bad?

We should have a High View of Scripture!

Disciples who are convinced don’t look for ways around Scripture - they have a WORLDVIEW that compliments Scripture and applies wisdom from its teaching.

Disciples Dwell On Inspired Scripture.

Because it is God’s Word - inspired by Him - it is profitable, and as long as the men behind this sacred desk keep their mind upon God and are directed by the Holy Spirit - we will al know that what we hear is the Word of God mixed with Personality for our benefit and growth.

There are Four Verb Phrases that help us see how Scripture is helpful.

Teaching - v. 14 “Continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of...”

obviously, this is providing instruction - both formal and informal.

This alludes to our formal Discipleship times of Bible Study but also the overall culture of our church family.

and the extension of what we teach in the life moments.

Informal teaching - teaching is caught as much as it is taught.

Teachable moments abound in the ways that we live for Christ.

Reproof - “to state that someone has done wrong, with the implication that there is adequate proof of such wrongdoing.”

I don’t do much reproof in person, though i have.

but I can tell you that sometimes the Bible does, preaching does, and the Holy Spirit certainly does - sometimes all simultaneously.

Most of us know that what that’s like to be in worship or private devotion and to feel just Reproofed by the Lord or His Word for something that we come to realize we are wrong over.

Of course, if some of have a hard time admitting that we are ever wrong - then the Spirit goes to work on that hard heart.

If there is adequate proof of wrong doing - it is even worse to allow that wrong to continue.

Godly people are called to reproof!

Correction - “ to cause something to be or to become correct, with the implication of a previous condition of faults or failures.”

This correction is different in respect to reproof - because it is like straightening something up.

More of a off and on reminder than it is a Sharp Reproof!

Correction is like, “don’t eat with your elbows on the table, don’t smack your lips when you chew.”

For the believer - don’t be a sloppy drunk and wear your First Baptist Church to the bar.

Don’t act like a fool 6 days a week and think you are going to fool everyone in the church on Sunday.

There is no fooling for long - and sometimes we just need a correction.

A straightening up.
