God Gives His Children Good Gifts
For it is just like a man about to go on a journey, who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them.
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
It is important to see that God entrusts us with his possessions.
God blesses us with resources, time, and talents.
For the purpose of today’s message, I want to focus on the talents God gives us.
God gives gifts not based on the person but the purpose!
The owner of the possessions did not owe the slaves anything.
He gave the gift for the purpose of a return on the possession he gave.
What Does God Want Us To Do With the Gifts He Gives Us?
He wants us to use our gifts to build His church.
11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the [a]saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ
We are to use the gifts God gives us to equip others for the work of service so the body of Christ will be built up.
You do this by simply doing it yourself to demonstrate how it is done and teach others how to do what you do.
This must be intentional.
We must select a few people and intentionally teach them.
This is called discipleship.
He wants us to use our gifts to serve others.
10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
The gifts God gives are not meant for selfish purposes, but meant to serve others.
God has gifted me to speak to crowds.
I use to travel the country and speak to bank managers on how to make their clients more profitable.
I realized that I was using my talent to give people something that would earn them temporary satisfaction.
God called me to use my gift that He gave to share with people how they could have eternal satisfaction in Him.
He has also gifted me with a financial background.
I can use this to help others be good stewards of what God has blessed them with.
God wants us to use our gifts to serve others with no expectation of receiving anything in return.
Many doctors, business owners, Contractors, ect… use their giftedness to help others that need it and can’t afford it.
He wants us to use the gifts that He gives to bring glory to Himself.
16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
God desires for us to use our giftedness to engage in good works so that others will see the goodness of God and bring Him glory.
Often times God will gift you in ways that go beyond your level of ability.
This is the gift that comes from God to accomplish His purpose.
When others see that It was not you but God that accomplished His purpose they will glorify Him and not you!
How Has God Gifted You and What Are You Doing With It?
Please think about how God has gifted you and how you are using it to serve the church, serve others, and ultimately bring glory to God.
If you are not applying your giftedness in these three ways or don’t know what your giftedness is, I would love to have the opportunity to help you discover and employ the gift God has given you.
We Can Use God’s Gift Or We Can Bury Them.
15 “To one he gave five atalents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he went on his journey.
16 “Immediately the one who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and gained five more talents.
17 “In the same manner the one who had received the two talents gained two more.
18 “But he who received the one talent went away, and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
The First Two Servants Employed the Gifts Their Master Gave Them.
Notice the first two servants immediately employed their gifts
They didn’t wait to be told how or what to do.
They just took what was given to them and wanted to do a good job with it to please their master.
The master did not tell them how much he expected them to make with what he gave them, only that there would be a settling of accounts.
The first to just did what they though was best for their master.
One of the biggest obstacles in employing God’s gift is the fear of failure.
These two servants did not appear to fear losing what was given because what was expected in return was not spelled out.
I believe that is the way God deals with us.
He does not tell us exactly what return he expects from the gifts He gives, only that we employ them how he desires.
I believe that if they would have invested the talents in the way God wanted and they lost the investment, he would have still commended them for there trying.
Notice that they started immediately because they didn’t know when their master was going to return.
They didn’t know how much time they would have to bring the best return to their master.
They started immediately so they would have enough time to bring the very best to their master.
We too do not know how much time we will have to employ the gifts God has given us.
Let’s start immediately!
The Last Slave Buried His Talent.
Notice when He buried it, he didn’t have to do anything more with it.
This man lived in fear of his master where the other two lived in love for their master.
This last slave didn’t know his master.
He told him , “ Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you scattered no seed.
25 ‘And I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the ground.
See, you have what is yours.’
Because this man did not know his master very well, he was not willing to do anything with the gift that was given to him.
Friends, the Father loves us and has given us the ability to know Him through His Son Jesus Christ.
The better we know the Father the bolder we will be in employing the gifts that He has given us.
The Master identified the last slave as wicked and lazy.
There is no place for wickedness in the Child of God’s life.
We are to live in a love relationship with God that manifests itself in holiness.
25 ‘And I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the ground.
See, you have what is yours.’
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, 15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
The more we abide with Christ, the more christ-like we will become.
There is not a place for God’s children to be lazy.
Go to the ant, O sluggard,
Observe her ways and be wise,
7 Which, having no chief,
Officer or ruler,
8 Prepares her food in the summer
And gathers her provision in the harvest.
9 How long will you lie down, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
10 “A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest”—
11 Your poverty will come in like a vagabond
And your need like an armed man.
God Rewards the Faithful and Punishes the Unfaithful
God Rewarded the first two servants
The reward was the same but the same, but the return was different.
Both slaves got to enter into the joy of their master and were given more to be in charge of.
When we observe the fruit of our lives we will see that it is proportionate to what we did with what God gave us.
6 Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
Do you have much or little everlasting fruit in your life?
If the answer is little ask how have I sown the seed that God has given me?
If the answer is not well, then start immediately sowing the seed while you have time and you will receive a great reward.
God punished the last slave.
The master took away his gift and banished him into the outer darkness.
