The Spirit Transforms Your Attitude

Love - Agape love is the kind of love that seeks the best for someone else.
God desires to fill your life with his love in two ways:
Agape love is the kind of love that seeks the best for someone else, not for what I can get out of them.
To bear the fruit of love we must first be filled with God’s love.
His love for us.
1 John 3:1 ESV
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
His love through us to others.
1 John 3:16–17 NASB95
We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?
1 John 3:16 ESV
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
Joy - Chara is the rejoicing of new life.
When a woman gives birth or a soul is saved.
Joy is a result of realizing you have eternal life by Christ’s resurrection from the dead.
When the disciples saw the risen Lord they were filled with JOY.
John 16:20–22 ESV
Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
Peace - eirene is the harmony with others and inner calm.
Peace comes from being in right relationship with God.
God wants to fill your life with peace.
John 14:28 ESV
You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
John 14:27 ESV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
The Holy Spirit will begin to build love, joy, and peace into your heart as you dwell upon the Word of God.
Colossians 3:14–16 ESV
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Col. 3:1

The Spirit Empowers Your Actions

Patience - long-suffering toward others, particularly when wronged.
God has shown great patience toward us, therefore we must be patient with others.
2 Peter 3:9 ESV
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
2 Peter 3:8 ESV
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2 Pet 3:
Kindness - chrestotes - is a gentleness of nature. It is opposite of harshness. The Goodness of God relates to His Covenant keeping love.
God has been kind in his dealing with us.
Psalm 103:13 ESV
As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
Goodness - agathosyne - generosity toward others. It is active
Taken together these three describe how we are to put love into action.

The Spirit Ensures Your Fruit Abides

Faithfulness - pistis. In this use meaning fidelity, holding to the truth, trustworthy.
The Spirit brings God’s work in our heart to completion. He keeps us from falling.
Jude 24–25 ESV
Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
Gentleness - prates - this one is specifically in relation to God. It is meekness.
Gentleness - prates - this one is specifically in relation to God. It is meekness.
“Gentleness is a “submissive and teachable spirit toward God that manifests itself in genuine humility and consideration toward others.” - Timothy George
James 1:21 ESV
Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
Self-control - enkateia - mastery over one’s desires and passions.
2 Peter 1:6 ESV
and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,
The Holy Spirit empowers us to continue in the faith, submit to God’s leadership in our life, and control our own sinful passions.
They that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh (active not passive in this case). As believers we have a role to play in being obedient to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
