Verse
Isaiah 55:2 NIV
Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.
isaiah
Haggai 1:4–6 NIV
“Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

Summary
I going to be honest. I sat down to write this summary a few times
I contemplated how to approach the subject of addiction using the verses.
I contemplated how to just diagnose the verse.
I thought about addiction and its impact on people I know of and people I know personally.
I thought about what addiction means.
I remembered some people who I lost because of their addictions.
I watched and read various sermons done on addiction and on these verses.
I sought the advice of some people here in the church, and some in other churches I know.
Finally, I did what I should have done at the start - I prayed on it and gave it onto God to guide me.
So lets talk about addiction; but be ready, because addiction may not be as simple! It may be part of your life in ways you are not aware of and it may be impacting you everyday.
Isaiah 55:2 NIV
Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.
It’s an interesting verse - and easily applicable to today’s world with little need for translation.
Why are you spending money on things you do not need to live?
Why are you putting work and effort into something that does not make you happy?
It seems so simple!
It is very easy to see how this applies to addiction. We all have heard of junkies spending all their money on drugs and not having enough to eat, clothe themselves or even put a roof over their heads.
Don’t do drugs! There you go lesson on addiction done!
What you think there may be more to this? Addiction is as simple as just staying away from illegal drugs?
We cannot forget the classic addictions either.
I suppose you are correct we cannot forget the classic addictions either. You know the ones, they are legal, but we all know that they are addictions and can lead to bad things in our lives.
We cannot forget the classic addictions either.
We shake our heads and feel pity for these poor people who cannot control their addiction.
Growing up we had a town drunk, everyone in town knew him! He would spend every cent he had, whether it was earned or given to him, on alcohol. Definitely an alcoholic! So even though alcohol is legal it is addictive and often becomes a problem in peoples lives.
We cannot forget the classic addictions either.
My father and mother were both smokers - even though I had a serious allergy to cigarette smoke. They both smoked until I was a teen, my mom finally managed to quit. My father still smokes to this day, he has never been able to beat the addiction - even though he has tried several times.
While I lived in Korea I remember reading stories about parents whose children had died while they were at a PC Bang playing games. Their addiction overrode their natural instinct to protect and care for their child.
How about marijuana? While many claim it is not addictive physically - is it addictive mentally? You see we often think only about addiction in a physical term, but reality is many thing we get addicted to are much more dangerous because they are not physically, they are social or mental addictions.
Gambling is another one of these. Many people get addicted to the thrill of winning and losing money. The government regulates it but addicted gamblers will gamble on anything even if it means losing everything the have.
Sex and porn. Yup the taboo addictions that no one likes to talk about. However, that is the biggest problem with many addictions. We don’t talk about the subject because its taboo and that just causes the addict to hide their addiction rather than seek out the help and guidance they need to overcome their addiction.
Well that’s a longer list! I am pretty confident in saving we all know someone who has one of those addictions; or maybe we were or still are addicted to one of them.
We know that the addiction is having an impact on them socially, physically or mentally. That the addiction starts to control their lives, making them make choices they normally would not make so that they can get what they crave.
And in many cases that they cannot get the help they need because or cost, embarrassment or that their addiction is socially acceptable.
Those of you who are free of these addictions might shake your heads and feel pity for people who cannot control their addictions. You think about how happy or lucky you are to not have one of these addictions.
However, try to apply this to your life. Stop right now and look at your phones, your clothes, the makeup you are wearing?
Do you need these to survive or are you living in luxury. I now it may seem like we need the latest iPhone; the high end bag or shirt, that awesome makeup from Sephora?
But do we?
We have been told since we were very young that these things would make us happy! We can fulfill our life by having these things. So we seek out the latest technology, the designer clothing or bag, that lipstick that is so smooth; whatever we think will make our lives better. Often stretching the limits of our bank account to afford them. Isn’t that addiction. Aren’t we spending money on things that are not bread when we buy luxury items we know we really don’t need or cannot afford?
Why are you putting work and effort into something that does not make you happy?

Exodus 20:4–6 NIV
“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
