Today we come to comandment #4 in our series of the ten comandments for the 21st century.
remember the first three
you will have no other Gods before or beside me
you will not make any gravem images
you will not misuse the name of the Lord
remember the sabeth day.
Ex
I. initial exhortation (V.
8)
A.
A. Remember the Sabbath day (V.
8a)
The main point here is to keep it in mind, to profess the idea the emphisis being never forget.
The word sabbeth carries with it the litteral meaning to not forget.
B. Keep the Sabbath day holy (V.
8b)
It is of significance that the exhortation is “to keep it holy not as some people say “and keep it holy” the emphisis here is on “to” “you keep the sabbeth day holy by rembering it.
The holiness of the Sabbeth depends upon the people remembering it and observing it since the sabbeth is for the people it is the people that make it holy
II.
You will (v.
9-10)
A. You will Labor six days (v.
9a)
We are to Work a christian is not to be lazy
The word work is used in one form or another 610 times throughout all of scripture.
even though work is importent so is rest.
when this comandment was written work was an every day all day thing.
and this comanment laid out the need for rest.
even God himself rested on the 7th day of creation.
as we will see in ex 20:11
a.
You will do all your work (v.9b)
in addition he lays out that all the work will be done during the week, this comand for rest in no way gives and out to be lazy through the week and not accomplish responsinbilities
B. On the seventh day you will do No work (v.
10b)
After working rest is required in the book of Deuteronomy this comand is repeated
notice in cerse 15 moses reminded the Isrilites that they were slaves and had no rest.
Therefore in the view of the Bible those that choose to not rest and work all seven days a week are slves.
They may not nesesarily be slaves to a person like the isriltes were, but they are slaves
to their carear
to money
ext.
He then gives specific instruction on who will do no work.
you son
your daughter
your servents
your livestalk
any other resedent
a. your son will do no work V. 10c)
b. your daughter will do no work (V.
10d)
c. your servents will do no work (V. 10 e)
-This was a significant claim in scripture making the comand that even a slave had fundemntle human rights to rest one day a week.
The slave owner in socioty was under no obligaton to allow his slaves to rest, and certenly not to rest a whole day every week, but this comand cmands just that.
