Matthew 14:13–21 ESV
Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

*I am not over all this, I know my limitations, go to the Lord.
GOSPEL REST
America at Rest
We live to produce
We live to create
We live to work
Our routine
Most of us will work 40+ hours at a job or at our home
WE BELIEVE THIS IS GOOD
WORK IS NOT A BAD THING
Assumption that Rest is for the Weak
This is what we say with our actions
Functional Center
WORKER
My identity and worth are determined by what I produce/do
I am made to work, to create, to produce
The pinnacle is earthly
My aim is temporal
WE RECOGNIZE WHAT WE’RE AIMING FOR BY PAYING ATTENTION TO OUR DAYDREAMS
Where do we drift off to?
When you’re driving, where does your mind go?
What do you imagine about?
STEWARD
My identity and worth are determined by the fact that I am a son/daughter of God
I am made in God’s image
I am made as a steward, managing God’s stuff (world)
The pinnacle/destination is heaven!
My aim is spiritual, in nature!
*I am not over all this, I know my limitations, I serve and engage trusting that God is going to show up!
GOSPEL FAITH
Self-centered faith
I can’t rest… because everything rests on me.
I can’t rest… because I am made to work.
I can’t have faith in God… because it’s really on me to get all this done.
I can’t take risks… because I can’t control the outcomes.
So my actions communicate that: (1) God either isn’t going to show up, or (2) He isn’t any good. Either way, it’s on me.
God-centered Faith
I can rest… because I know that God holds everything.
I can rest… because I am made to steward.
I can have faith in God.... because he is over and above all things!
I can take risks… because I know God controls the outcomes… and God is good!
