Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.
After he said good-bye to them, he went away to the mountain to pray.
Well into the night, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.
He saw them straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Very early in the morning he came toward them walking on the sea and wanted to pass by them.
When they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out,
because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke with them and said, “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded,
because they had not understood about the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened.

Illus: Can you imagine if we lived with the urgency for spiritual nourishment that we did for physical nourishment?
When physical needs come up, we put our world on hold to meet them.
Think of Jesus feeding the 5000. Jesus did not say, its ok, we can feed them next week. Instead, life came to a screeching halt till people got fed.
Jesus shows that his spiritual nourishment, mattered as much as physical nourishment.
How often do we look at spiritual nourishment as something we can procrastinate. I’ll get serious about being with God’s body later, I know I need to pray, but just don’t have time, etc.
Jesus shows in this passage that spiritual nourishment is as important as physical nourishment.

Our God sees the whole picture. He does not panic because he is always in control
That means that while we are out of control, God is stable. While we are freaking out, God is standing firm.
He is our rock in the midst of our mess.

22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 After dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. Well into the night, he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile, the boat was already some distance from land, battered by the waves, because the wind was against them. 25 Jesus came toward them walking on the sea very early in the morning. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and they cried out in fear.
27 Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter answered him, “command me to come to you on the water.”
29 He said, “Come.”
And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32 When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Illus: Peter specifically pointed out his story because it was how God worked in HIS life.
God is working globally, he is working our a grand plan across the nations, but we need for it to make a difference personally in our own lives. For most of the disciples, the story was about the big picture. It was about how Jesus walked on the water. For peter, it was about how Christ led him to walk on the water.

Illus: As great as the miracle in peter’s life was, the story was not about Peter walking on water. The story is about Jesus’ control of the water.
How often do we make our own christian walk solely about us. In fact, Christianity is more about ourselves than about Jesus.
I believe the story was omited because Mark saw Jesus in this story far more than he saw peter.
Over and over scripture communicates that we should become more and more about what he is doing, not what we are walking through.
A christian heart is moved from selfishness to Christ focused. .

In your life, are you focused more on the how to get through the waves, or on the hand of God.

Illus: Imagine being on the disciple’s boat. The waves are swelling. What are you focused on?
Yet Jesus walks, not sprints or panics, walks and calms the storm.
He was in control the whole time.
In your life, are your eyes on the waves, or are they on Jesus.
The moment you place your eyes on Jesus, the waves may not fade, but they will no longer consume you.

6 For if I want to boast, I wouldn’t be a fool, because I would be telling the truth. But I will spare you, so that no one can credit me with something beyond what he sees in me or hears from me, 7 especially because of the extraordinary revelations. Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. 10 So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
