ILLUST: Missionary John Paton
-translating the Bible for a tribe in the South Seas
-The tribe had no word for Faith.
-He struggled with how he might use thier language to convey the idea of faith.
-One day a native who had been running hard came into his house
-Completely flopped in a large chair and said
“ITS GOOD TO REST MY WHOLE WEIGHT ON THIS CHAIR”
Paton thought THAT’S IT!
-HE TRANSLATED FAITH AS “RESTING ONE’S WHOLE WEIGHT ON GOD”

I. The Sufficiency of The Shield of Faith

In all Circumstances
All The flaming darts
-Arows wrapped w/ pieces of cloth and soaked in flamable tar type substance
-Before the arrow was shot it would be lit and turned into a flaming missle
-
Extinguished all the flaming darts
Of the Evil One- Vs 11 “the devil”
-Probabaly what is in view here is the flamming arrows are temptations…one of Satan’s tools
-He uses the temptations to deceive us into believing that giving in to them will meet our needs or give us fulfillment.
-As Satan hurls arrows our way....immorality, envy, anger, pride, doubt, worry or fear…any other sin we can think off…
-we must remember to trust God!
-believe God…believe that he desires our God
-believe that he can meet any longing that we have in a while that is eternally satisfying.

II. The Availability of The Shield

“Take up”
-verse 14 “having fastened, Having put”
-verse 15 “having put”
Roman Soldiers would lay down the shield...but the would keep it close
I KNOW THE BATTER IS TOUGH…ANd sometimes faith is hard...
-When you are weak, remember that you fight not with your strength, but the strength that God supplies
-When you are blinded by the flames of the incoming arrows, remember the promise of God though the shield of faith
-When temptation comes…remember where you joy is found..not in fleshly desires, but in desirering GOD
-When you fail…and you have lost the batter…remember that Christ has already won the war through the cross.
-Dear brother or sister…you are not fighting for victory to be secured…you are fighting from victory that has already been secured
--When the situation before you is impossible remember that the object of our faith, Jesus Christ, is able.
One night a house caught fire and a young boy was forced to flee to the roof. The father stood on the ground below with outstretched arms, calling to his son, "Jump! I'll catch you." He knew the boy had to jump to save his life. All the boy could see, however, was flame, smoke, and blackness. As you can be imagined, he was afraid to leave the roof. His father kept yelling: "Jump! I will catch you." But the boy protested, "Daddy, I can't see you." The father replied, "But I can see you and that's all that matters."
