Introduction:
“Only Human” — there’s a popular song our now by the title “I’m Only Human After All".
In the song he says, "I'm only human after all
Don't put your blame on me.”
So he uses the excuse that he’s “only human” as a means not having responsibility.
But this raises as huge question, "What does it mean to be human?”
Seems like a simple question, but what does that really mean?
Are we evolved apes?
Why are we here?
What is our purpose?
Main Idea: In Genesis 1, we are given four essential truths that ground what it means to be human.
1.
We are Created by God
Genesis 1:26 READ
Though we are merely created out of the “dust of the earth”, it was God who created humans to be the pentacle of his creation.
We should not be surprised that we share DNA with animals.
We are created uniquely and specially … We are not naked apes
If man were his own creator, he would be responsible to no one.
But he is not his own creator.
He is created by God, and this means that he is responsible to God for what he does in every area of his life and particularly for how he carries out the mandate to rule over creation.
—Boice
2. We are Created with Value
Genesis 1:27 READ
What is the worth of a person?
What makes a person valuable?

Created in the “image” of God
We are created to reflect God—like diamond
What do we reflect?
His communicable attributes—

This means that every human being has dignity and value.

3.
We Created with Purpose
Genesis 1:26-28 READ
We are created to be God’s vice regents—co-creators—caretakers
we are to care for the land and have dominion over the animals because we are to bring order and beauty out of the natural chaos.
I’ll.

4.
We are Created for Fellowship with God
God walked with Adam and Eve in the garden
God created Adam and “breathed” into him
God continues to desire fellowship with us.
… this was why we were created
This is why God would send his Son, Jesus to live and die on our behalf.
Conclusion:
C.S. Lewis Quote — Every human is a spiritual being created in God’s image.
