Joseph is a model of purity and obedience in the face of strong temptation. So why does he suffer injustice? Why do his circumstances get even worse? Why does he seem to be punished for his purity? Because, under the sovereignty of God, things are not as they seem. This chapter reminds us that we don't seek righteousness for the sake of personal reward, but for the sake of God's honour. And this chapter reminds us that reward is not defined by personal comfort, but by the presence of God and the promises of God. So, once again, it is faith in God that motivates our purity and feeds our obedience. It is the broader vision of pleasure and blessing that shines through the immediate injustice and pain.
