Complete Surrender

Romans 1:16–17 ESV

Sermon

Romans 1:17 ESV
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Why does Paul add this phrase? / Why not stop at 16?
How does the gospel reveal the righteousness of God?
What is God’s Righteousness?
What does righteousness mean?
Why does it need to be revealed?
What does from faith to faith mean?
What is faith?
Why does Paul put a quote here?
Why this quote?
What does the quote mean?
Who are the righteous?
How do they live by faith?
How does this apply to me today?
How should this effect the rest of my life?

Paul says he is not ashamed of the gospel and the more I think aout it the more I wonder if he says this because of the reasons I talked about two weeks ago or for some toher reason all together. See the more I think about it, the more I have to say that I am ashamed of the gospel. I am ashamed of my sin that required the death of Jesus to atone for it. I am ashamed that I often cannot or do not appreceate it as I ought to. I am ashamed that I offten cannot or do not proclaim it as it should be. I am not ashamed of the message of the gospel but rather by the very thing itself because of what it reminds me of, primarily the depth of my depravity before a Holy God. It is this very Gospel that brings me shame and that I am ashamed of because I recognize the depth of my wickness before a Holy God one who loves me in the face of my wickedness and who was then driven by His love to do such an amazing act on my behalf.
This I believe is the same problem many face and is I believe the same issue Martin Luther faced on this section of text. This I believe is what Satan counts on when he points his finger into our chest and accuses us of all our sinful disobedience behind us, pontificating on our present practices of piety, and forecasting our future failure with ferocity. This I believe is why many churches, preachers, and evangelist end there messages with the true but feeble message that God is love and God loves you. That message must be meet with a resounding yes but then we must add the deep theology of His holiness and his justice. If God were only Love then how would verse 18 of this chapter make sense? We would need to re-write it:
“For the LOVE of God is revealed from heaven TOWARD all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who in their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth

God is love = chaning lots of scrip...
God is Love =/= trump other attributes / character traits
God is Love = strnegthens the necessity of the other traits
1 = Justice = the problem
Holy God + Sinful Man + Justice [Love] = Wrath / Punishment
brings us to V17 = the problem
How does this gospel reveal the loving justice of God? How could we [sinners] ever possibly be saved by it? = PROBLEM!!

Romans 3:5 ESV
5 But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.)
Romans 3:10–20 ESV
10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” 13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” 14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 in their paths are ruin and misery, 17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Romans 4:2–8 ESV
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. 5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; 8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”
Romans 5:9 ESV
Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

Exalt God in relation to the Biblical truths that were just taught
Jesus our Savior and King our words are insufficient to express to you the depth of our praise and thanksgiving. We rejoice therefore that our words are unnecessary because our very souls cry out to you, as deep calls out to deep. Our praise is carried up to you through the groanings of your Holy Spirit. How deep and wide is your love for us that we are given this gift of grace. Oh Lord sustain us forevermore with this revealed righteousness which is ours by faith in faith for faith!
Name the Biblical principles preached and ask God to help the local church body to obey these truths
Name the Biblical principles preached and ask God to help the local church body to obey these truths
Help us to apply this revealed righteousness! Teach us to rest in it, the cherish it, to be strengthened by, led by and fed by it. This revealed righteousness of the cross of calvary which saved and continues to save our souls. Let us never be ashamed and always proclaiming this gloriously simple truth of your grace, “the righteous shall live by faith!”
Draw people to the cross of Christ by proclaiming hope and help in the person and work of Christ for salvation and sanctification
Draw people to the cross of Christ by proclaiming hope and help in the person and work of Christ for salvation and sanctification
Call to the cross that those who need God’s righteousness would receive it by faith.

Benediction
