Introduction

Having a difficult conversation is not easy, why?
How do you initiate a difficult conversation within your family?
How do you initiate a difficult conversation within your church family? What factors must you consider?
Transition: Paul’s Difficult Conversation with the church in Corinth

Initial Approach Is Important

What is your relationship to the person(s) you need to have the difficult conversation? Does your relationship to them matter? Why or why not?
1 Corinthians 1:1 ESV
Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes,
What does it mean to be called? How do you know if you are called to do something?

Who & How is Paul called?
By the will of God.
Will = purposed, intended, purpose, plan
So Paul is called for God’s purposes and plans.
How have you been called for God’s purposes and plans?
What is Paul called to be?
What is an Apostle?
Note that Paul is not working alone. He is working with another brother in the body of Christ.
Much of ministry is not handled in solo. And Sometimes you need another brother or sister to come along.
Matthew 18:15–17 ESV
“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
What is your attitude towards the person(s) you feel led to have the difficult conversation?
How does the Apostle Paul view the church in Corinth who are the recipients of this letter?

To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:
The local church of God
church is a group or assembly of persons called together for a particular purpose.
congregation of Christians, implying interacting membership
Why are we called together? What is our church’s purpose?
Sanctified in Jesus Christ. Why is this noteworthy?
sanctified = dedicate to the service of and to loyalty to deity, dedicated to God
Called to be Saints together. What is this important to know? Jesus called (summoned) them, so they are in the church for a Godly reason/purpose
persons who belong to God, and as such constitute a religious entity
Therefore regarding the parts of the body all the more imortant
Holy, holy one
With all those who in every place call upon the name of our LORD Jesus Christ
Both their LORD and ours
no “he,” “she,” or “them” but “us,” “ours,” and “we”
We worship the same LORD. Jesus is just as much your LORD as Jesus is my LORD

In what ways can you thank the LORD for those whom you need to correct or have a difficult conversation?
Paul says in that he give thanks to my God always for the church at Corinth, what is Paul (actually the Holy Spirit) saying?

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus,
says that God has shown the church in Corinth grace in Christ Jesus. Why does “in Christ Jesus matter?”
How has God shown the church in Corinth grace?

that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge—

How has God shown the church in Corinth grace?
Enriching them in Christ Jesus in all speech

even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you—

Working out their salvation with “fear & trembling”

What is the testimony about Christ?
For their work here on earth until Jesus Christ comes back

Giving them all of the spiritual gifts that they need

Who is faithful? Why is this important to know?
What fellowship are we ultimately apart? Why do we need to understand this reality?
