This is not the first time that the author of Hebrews spoke to his reader about endurance back in 10:36 he told them they had need of endurance so that when they had done the will of God, they may receive what was promised. He follows that up by writing a whole chapter that is devoted to the Old Testament saint who endured in their faith, although they did not receive the promise of Christ which we have received. Now he returns to endurance by saying we have this great cloud go witnesses form the Old Testament and Jesus Himself who is the penultimate example of endurance since he endured horrible suffering by faith. He endured the cross and is now seated at the right hand of the father. So what we see here is that we need to run this race of our Christian faith with endurance and while we are doing so we need to consider Jesus.
