Let’s talk about an important subject

The Holy Spirit, or the Holy Spirit of God, is not an it, it is a person a part of the Godhead so studying the Holy Spirit is vital for understanding, for knowledge, for application in our lives.
Over the next few weeks (about 12 or so) we will look at, glimpse at some of these topics when it comes to the Holy Spirit.
The personality of the Holy Spirit
The deity of the Holy Spirit
The work of the Holy Spirit
The promise of the Holy Spirit
The gift of the Holy Spirit, and more
As we do the introduction tonight we will look at
The Prominence of the Holy Spirit as seen in the Bible
The Prominence of the Holy Spirit in life of Jesus
The Prominence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the Christian
The Prominence of the Holy Spirit, discerning truth and error
Many try to put the Holy Spirit in a box since they cannot fully understand the Spirit.
Others let loose so much they are not seeing the Holy Spirit as He is shown, described in the Bible.
We should not shy from a study of the Holy Spirit; this will be extensive but not exhaustive study, but hopefully enlightening or reminding to you

I. Prominence of the Spirit

Prominence of Bible, prominence of the Holy Spirit in the Bible. May we learn the importance (prominence) of the Holy Spirit that makes the fact or condition (prominence) of the Holy Spirit stand out (prominence).
The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
Mentioned 88 times (Psm51:11)
Interesting fact; the Holy Spirit directly mentioned only 3 times, but inferred the other 85 times. Still we can see the prominence of the Spirit in the O.T.
Psalm 51:11 NASB95
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Mentioned in 23 out of 39 books
Other name used in O.T. Spirit of God (Gen1:2)
The Holy Spirit was there in the beginning and was directly involved in creation
Genesis 1:2 NASB95
2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
The Holy Spirit in the New Testament
He is mentioned 264 times, 60 in Gospels, 57 in Acts and 132 in epistles
Some people refer to the book of Acts as the acts of the Holy Spirit not acts of the apostles due to such great involvement of the Holy Spirit there and only limited Apostles and their acts listed.
Only 3 books, epistles, do not mention the Spirit (Philemon, 2 & 3 John)
For us to understand the Bible God has given us His Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God to help us. The Holy Spirit is what God used to construct the Bible through the works of man. So we must try to grasp the prominence of the Holy Spirit if we want to grasp God.
(transition): The Holy Spirit was prominent in the Life of Christ so let’s look at that next

II. Prominence of the Spirit in Life of Christ

From before Jesus birth until His death the prominence of the Spirit is seen.
Prominence in birth
In Elizabeth (Lk1:41-42); In Zacharias (Lk1:67-79)
Luke 1:41–42 NASB95
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
(make reference and expand on Lk1:67-79)
In conception of Jesus (Mt1:20; Lk1:30-35)
Matthew 1:20 NASB95
20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit works in ways man would not expect in people you would not expect.
Luke 1:31–32 NASB95
31 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. 32 “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;
Luke 1:33–34 NASB95
33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”
Luke 1:35 NASB95
35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.
Then there is another.
In Simeon (Lk2:25-35)
Just summarize this story
Simeon a righteous and devout man who was looking for the consolation of Israel (the messiah) - the Holy Spirit was on Him and revealed to Him that He would not die until he saw the messiah.
He did, he took Him and blessed Him and told God thank you! Then he blessed Mary and Joseph
The Holy Spirit at work through a young girl from unlikely background, to an old man. This same Spirit can work in and through you
Prominence at baptism
Descended in form of a dove (Lk3:21-22)
Luke 3:21–22 NASB95
21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
(expand) what John had said previously (see LK3:15-16)
Sat upon Him (Mt3:16)
Matthew 3:16 NASB95
16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,
His prominence in the temptations of Jesus
filled and lead by the Spirit (Lk4:1, Mt4:1)
Luke 4:1 NASB95
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness
and then
Matthew 4:1 NASB95
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
So upon baptism the Spirit came, sat upon, filled and then lead Jesus. The power of the Spirit is to demonstrated in the ministry of Jesus.
His prominence during ministry of Jesus
In the power of the Spirit He taught (Lk4:14-15)
Luke 4:14–15 NASB95
14 And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. 15 And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.
He spoke of the filling and fulfilling by the Spirit in Him (LK4:16-21)
Luke 4:16–17 NASB95
16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. 17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written,
Luke 4:18–19 NASB95
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, 19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
Luke 4:20–21 NASB95
20 And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
(expand on the above scriptures no more than 5 minutes)
He even rejoiced, prayed in the Spirit (LK10:21)
Luke 10:21 NASB95
21 At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.
Claims that by the Holy Spirit casts out demons (Mt12:28)
Matthew 12:28 NASB95
28 “But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
If the Son of God is filled with the Spirit of God to accomplish the will of God, don’t we need the Spirit too? He is freely given to us and has prominence in our life, hopefully we give it to Him willingly so we can have the blessings of the Spirit too.

Prominence of Spirit in life of Christian

Did you know the Spirit was at work on you before you came to even know about the Spirit? And now that you know and have received the Spirit his presence, his prominence should be known and seen in your life.
Spirit worked on you so can come in you.
Convicted of sin by the Spirit (Jn16:7-8)
John 16:7–8 NASB95
7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
Born again by the Spirit (Jn3:5-8)
John 3:5–6 NASB95
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
John 3:7–8 NASB95
7 “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Renewed, regenerated by the Spirit (Tit3:4-6)
Titus 3:4–5 NASB95
4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
Titus 3:6 NASB95
6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
The Holy Spirit the very presence and prominence of God in the life of the believer who had their sin convicted and then allowing the work of God to wash away your sins.
Presence and prominence in life of the believer
We are to live in the Spirit (Gal5:25)
Galatians 5:25 NASB95
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
We are to walk in the Spirit, bearing fruit (Gal5:25, Gal5:16-18; Gal5:22-23)
Galatians 5:16–17 NASB95
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
Galatians 5:18 NASB95
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
We are to set our minds on the the things of the Spirit (Rom8:5-6)
Romans 8:5–6 NASB95
5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,
It is by the power of the Spirit we put to death the things of the flesh (Rom8:12-13)
Romans 8:12–13 NASB95
12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
It is by the Spirit we are truly sons of God (Rom8:14)
Romans 8:14 NASB95
14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us (Rom8:26-27)
Romans 8:26–27 NASB95
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
(expand on this one) - - - - below no scriptures but expand on the points
We are strengthened by the Spirit (Eph3:16)
And because of all the above, we can have fellowship, and enjoy communion of the Spirit (2Cor13:14; Php2:1)
So clearly you can see the prominence of the Spirit in our lives as Christians and hopefully, prayerfully others will see the work in us and through us so as to touch others with the Spirit of God to lead the to become children of God.

IV. Prominence in discerning truth and error

While the Holy Spirit is the source of God’s truth HE is also the subject of much error too. So may we take a few more minutes and look at this subject
Source of Truth
Scriptures and prophesies came through Holy Spirit (2Pt1:20-21; 1Pt1:10-11)
2 Peter 1:20–21 NASB95
20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
and add to that
1 Peter 1:10–11 NASB95
10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.
Jesus told them Spirit would teach, remind them all things (Jn14:25-26; Jn16:12-13)
John 14:25–26 NASB95
25 “These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
Not only teach, remind, but to guide
John 16:12–13 NASB95
12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
The Spirit is the only way to know the truth of God’s will (1Cor2:10-13)
God gave the spirit to the apostles to write the words we have that brought us to faith and so we may know the will of God
1 Corinthians 2:10–11 NASB95
10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.
1 Corinthians 2:12–13 NASB95
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, 13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.
Subject of error
He is not in impersonal force expressive of God’s power
He is not Jesus in spirit form
below is for handout only
