God’s Charge to Isaiah
In chapter 57 there was a warning to bad spiritual leaders.
God compared them to a watchman who can’t see, a watchdog who won’t bark, and a shepherd who is more concerned with eating and drinking than watching the flock.
In chapter 58 God “charges” the preacher, Isaiah.
Usually when a preacher is ordained, there is a charge given to the preacher, and one to the church.
Charge means “to instruct authoritatively”
This is not at the beginning of his ministry, but nearing the end.
How to preach
Enthusiasm
Shout (I have seen some sermons that were heavy on volume, and light on content.)
Our sermons should certainly provide more light than heat… but they should also have some enthusiasm.
I have had at least two memorable conversations with the Fulenwider twins.
Once Kate asked me if I used shampoo.
And once Leigh Anne told that in her lifetime, Riddles Bend had not had a pastor that shouted until I got here.
Don’t hold back.
Sound the alarm.
This blowing of the Trumpet is a herald that something is up!
Stay in it.
This is implied, because Isaiah has been at it for decades and God is after him to keep it up.With the authority that comes from proclaiming the only book God has ever written
What to preach.
Tell God’s people their transgressions and their sin.
Does this mean that all preaching should be hell, fire, and brimstone.
OF COURSE NOT.But there is always a place for good, hard preaching.
Bill Stafford said one woman came up to him and said something like I don’t like your preaching.
Do you realize you said “amen?” 150 times.
He asked what did I say before that she said I don’t know.
He said what did I say after that and she said I don’t know.
He said well its a good thing I said amen or you wouldn’t have heard a word I said.
He also told of when people come to him and say “I like you, you tell it like it is” He said apparently there is too much much preaching telling it like it was, or like we want it to be.
We need white hot preaching that will tell it like it is!
Johnny Hunt said he rounded the aisle in a store and a former member said “I heard you an aisle over.
I would recognize that voice anywhere.
You still preaching that hell fire and damnation stuff?”
It may not be popular, and it shouldn’t be a steady diet, but straight talk is often what we need.
Question:What do you expect when you sit under the preaching of God’s Word?
Be careful that your attitude is not “Start at 11:00 AM sharp and leave at 12:00 Noon dull.”
Don’t just be hearers of the word, but doers also.
Don’t just listen for information, but for transformation.
