Nature of the New Covenant

The Moody Handbook of Theology Anticipation of a Regenerated People: The New Covenant

The New Covenant, foretold by the prophet Jeremiah, explains how God’s people Israel will enjoy the kingdom blessings. It is through a regenerated heart.

Future Day of restoration

Jeremiah 30:3 NIV
The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will bring my people Israel and Judah back from captivity and restore them to the land I gave their ancestors to possess,’ says the Lord.”
Impending invasion
Subsequent captivity
Also, Jeremiah envisioned a future day when God would restore the fortunes and bring them back into the land
The prophet Jeremiah announced the impending invasion by Nebuchadnezzar and the subsequent captivity in Babylon. But Jeremiah envisioned a future day when God would restore the fortunes of Israel and bring them back into the land ().

Great Tribulation

Jeremiah 30:7 NIV
How awful that day will be! No other will be like it. It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it.

Jeremiah Rebuilt in a Future Day

Jeremiah 30:18–24 NIV
“This is what the Lord says: “ ‘I will restore the fortunes of Jacob’s tents and have compassion on his dwellings; the city will be rebuilt on her ruins, and the palace will stand in its proper place. From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained. Their children will be as in days of old, and their community will be established before me; I will punish all who oppress them. Their leader will be one of their own; their ruler will arise from among them. I will bring him near and he will come close to me— for who is he who will devote himself to be close to me?’ declares the Lord. “ ‘So you will be my people, and I will be your God.’ ” See, the storm of the Lord will burst out in wrath, a driving wind swirling down on the heads of the wicked. The fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand this.

Kingdom Blessings Result

Jeremiah
Jeremiah
Jeremiah 31:1–12 NIV
“At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.” This is what the Lord says: “The people who survive the sword will find favor in the wilderness; I will come to give rest to Israel.” The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. I will build you up again, and you, Virgin Israel, will be rebuilt. Again you will take up your timbrels and go out to dance with the joyful. Again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria; the farmers will plant them and enjoy their fruit. There will be a day when watchmen cry out on the hills of Ephraim, ‘Come, let us go up to Zion, to the Lord our God.’ ” This is what the Lord says: “Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, ‘Lord, save your people, the remnant of Israel.’ See, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the ends of the earth. Among them will be the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in labor; a great throng will return. They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son. “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations; proclaim it in distant coastlands: ‘He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’ For the Lord will deliver Jacob and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they. They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will rejoice in the bounty of the Lord— the grain, the new wine and the olive oil, the young of the flocks and herds. They will be like a well-watered garden, and they will sorrow no more.

Blessing is based upon the New Covenant God would make with Israel.

Jeremiah 31:31–34 NIV
31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
Jeremiah
The New Covenant is made with the Nation of Israel.
Jeremiah 31:31 NIV
31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.
Eleven Provisions of the New Covenant
The New Covenant is an unconditional grace covenant resting on the “I will of God...
The New Covenant is an everlasting Covenant
The New Covenant also promises the impartation of a renewed mind and heart which we may call regeneration
The New Covenant provides for restoration to the favor and blessing of God. . .
Forgiveness of sin is also included in the covenant, ‘for I will remove their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more’ (
Jeremiah 31:34 NIV
34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
Jeremiah
6. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is also included. This is seen by comparing Jeremiah.
Jeremiah 31:33 NIV
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

8. As is always the case when Israel is in the land, she will be blessed materially in accordance with the provisions of the new covenant . . .
9. The sanctuary will be rebuilt in Jerusalem, for it is written ‘I will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. My tabernacle also shall be with them’
Ezekiel 37:26–27 NIV
26 I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant. I will establish them and increase their numbers, and I will put my sanctuary among them forever. 27 My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.

10. War shall cease and peace shall reign according to Hosea
Hosea 2:18 NIV
18 In that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the creatures that move along the ground. Bow and sword and battle I will abolish from the land, so that all may lie down in safety.
11. The blood of the Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation of all the blessings of the new covenant, for ‘by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water’
Zechariah 9:11 NIV
11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.

Fulfillment of the Covenant

The New Covenant cannot be taken to mean the New Covenant is fulfilled in the church for in , as well as in , it is stated that the covenant is made with “the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.”
The Covenant will be fulfilled with the nation with which the covenant is made. The time of fulfillment of the New Covenant is eschatological as seen from the context of . In the section of where is states, “Behold days are coming,” suggesting an eschatological setting
Jeremiah 31:27 NIV
27 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will plant the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with the offspring of people and of animals.
Jeremiah 30:7 NIV
7 How awful that day will be! No other will be like it. It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it.
describes the future tribulation period, whereas the remainder of is millennial.

Other prophets also regard the New Covenant as eschatological and therefore future.

Ezekiel
Ezekiel 34:25–26 NIV
25 “ ‘I will make a covenant of peace with them and rid the land of savage beasts so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety. 26 I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing.
Hosea 2:18–20 NIV
18 In that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the creatures that move along the ground. Bow and sword and battle I will abolish from the land, so that all may lie down in safety. 19 I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion. 20 I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the Lord.
Isaiah related the fulfillment of the New Covenant to the return of Messiah and the forgiveness of Israel
Isaiah 59:20–21 NIV
20 “The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,” declares the Lord. 21 “As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,” says the Lord.
Isaiah
Jeremiah related it to Israel’s restoration to the land
Jeremiah 32:37 NIV
37 I will surely gather them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.
Jeremiah
Jeremiah 32:40–41 NIV
40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me. 41 I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and soul.
The sequence of events set up by the prophets is that Israel will first be regathered and restored to the land and then will experience the blessings of the new covenant in the land. . . fulfillment of the prophecies requires the regathering of all Israel, their spiritual rebirth, and the return of Christ
The New Covenant is not fulfilled in the church but in the future kingdom.
