Introduction

Key Verse: When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.
The disciple’s solution was to get rid of the need by getting rid of the needy.
Mark 6:34 ESV
When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.

Mark 6:30–32 ESV
30 The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.
Mark 6:30

1. Compassion comes from rest

The Disciples are going out and doing wonders and signs and came back and reported all these great things to Jesus
Jesus responds to them by telling them to take a rest

Solitude vs. Isolation

Solitude = Alone with God
Isolation = Alone with Me
Mark 6:33 ESV
Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.
When you get to Solitude, distraction will come running to you
Mark 6:34 ESV
When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.

2. Opportunity or Work?

The Disciples viewed the crowd as “work”, especially in this case because they came and interrupted their time of rest
The Disciples viewed the crowd as “work”, especially in this case because they came and interrupted their time of rest
Jesus sees the crowd and has compassion on them
Each face reflected a need, a hunger, or a hurt.
Being a thoroughly others-centered person, Jesus cared more about the needs of someone else than he cared about His own needs.
He views them as Sheep without a Shepherd
Compassion will make us observe before we act
Mark 6:35–37 ESV
35 And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. 36 Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37 But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?”
Mark 6:35
The Disciples want to send the crowd away to eat
The Disciples want to send the crowd away to eat
The disciple’s solution was to get rid of the need by getting rid of the needy.
Jesus tells them to, “feed the crowd”
200 Denari = 200 Days Wage (est. 2/3 of a year’s salary)
Mark 6:38 ESV
38 And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”
Mark

3. Compassion already exists inside you

Before we ask God to give us more compassion, we should exercise the compassion we already have.
Who are some people you can have compassion on?
Even though may not have a lot of compassion now, use what you have, it will grow.
Mark 6:39–41 ESV
39 Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. 41 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all.

4. Compassion will bring chaos to order

Many situations where compassion is needed, order is also needed.
By listening first, we can assess the situation, ask God for wisdom and He will help bring order to the chaos.
Mark 6:42–44 ESV
42 And they all ate and were satisfied. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. 44 And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.

5. Compassion for others will lead to satisfaction

When Jesus is involved, no one will be left out.
Simplicity
Compassion applied to a situation may seem simple, but so was loaves and fish. Jesus could’ve given them steak and lobster, but instead chose simplicity.
The people were still filled and there was still enough left over.
