But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
Caiaphas was High Priest. He was a member of the Sadducees.
Caiaphas was tied at the hip to the Romans. He was appointed by the Romans. He served at their pleasure.
His was a political appointment, not a calling of God.
Caiaphas’ view was obscured by his own self interest.
Caiaphas couldn’t see the forest for the trees

Caiaphas was obviously wanted to protect his own position and power at the expense of someone else using religion as a cover.
Our motivations are many time driven more by whats good for us and not whats good for others.
We many time try to hide behind religion and high moral standards just to provide for our own self indulgence.
“Don’t judge others.”
“Jesus drank wine.”
“We’re suppose to love others.”
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes,
but the Lord weighs the heart.
Pride goes before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before a fall.
A great spiritual truth to be applied is that our greatest sacrifice or offering to God is self.
Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty,
but humility comes before honor.
He who finds a wife finds a good thing
and obtains favor from the Lord.
Be careful not to let man’s doctrine replace God’s direction.

Caiaphas attempted to place Sadducean doctrine with the Will of God.
The Sadducees believed that if it didn’t say it in the law of Moses it wasn’t to be followed.
Sadducees refused to apply all of scripture. They wanted to hang their hats on just part of it.

The idea that we know best and not willing to hear anything else is dangerous. Caiaphas proves that.
Hearing and following are two different things.
How to handle God’s Direction v.s. man’s doctrine.
Know God’s Word.
Apply all of God’s Word.
Test everything against Christ
Conceited pride causes us to think we know better than everyone else.

Look at what Caiaphas says in verse 49. “ You know nothing at all.”
He knew what was best.
Caiaphas was told that he was somebody enough that “it got good to him.” He began to believe it.
thats when he began to believe that he knew best.
There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death.
Pride is one of those “slithering sins.” It sneaks in a little at the time.
And every step it takes into our lives the easier it is for more to follow.
And the more pride fills us the less room there is for other things

Which is why many people don’t “get up from the tables of their lives and follow Christ.
Pride can keep us from experiencing the power of Christ in our lives.
Than brings us back to offering “a living sacrifice”
