19 But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
20 Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.

How do we know that what we’re doing at church is useful?
How do we know that God approves of what we do?
If we were to stand before God, how do we
motive, God’s way, right gifting, not reluctantly.
What a faithful worker is like - a worker that need not be ashamed.
What a worker ought to be - honourable/dishonourable - theme
Avoiding false teachers etc. from previous passage
God is sovereign in all things.

foundation - reference to the church.
if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
In the church there is irreverent babble that is leading people into more ungodliness and teachings outside the church that is very seriously leading people astray.
All of these burdens need to be addressed and what is right needs to be taught. Trying to save people.
God is sovereign.
Seal - ownership. Trust in God and what he’s done. There is a seal - part of our assurance of who we are in Christ
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
Those who are in Christ - those who have the seal - what is indicative of that?
God’s sovereignty - 1st quote (v19)
Man’s responsibility - 2nd quote (v19)
‘The Lord knows those who are his’:
and he said to Korah and all his company, “In the morning the Lord will show who is his, and who is holy, and will bring him near to him. The one whom he chooses he will bring near to him.
Paul is presenting the idea of predestination. God beforehand knows
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
How it helps in our thinking.
- Confidence knowing the fact that our salvation is secure in Christ. ‘Those who are His’.
- implication - Reminder that the visible church will always consist of believers and unbelievers. wheat and tares.
firm foundation - talking of the spiritual church
‘Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.’
O Lord our God, other lords besides thee have ruled over us, but thy name alone we acknowledge.

confidence in God’s sovereignty in our sanctification.
Our sanctification is an evidence of our salvation. Not something we can suddenly do on our own. It’s a result of our justification. It’s an outworking of our justification.
It is possible to show signs of sanctification without being saved.
This is the only way we can recognize false teachers.

Now in a great house - house could be 3 views: invisible or visible church or just a house.
If it is invisible church - looking at the structure from v20 onwards.
- vessels different 2 Timothy vessels.
vessels of gold and silver - prove that they are honorable. They would not let people come near wood and clay - menial and daily use for hygiene etc.
