Matthew 6:5–8 NASB95
“When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
Matthew 6:6–8 NASB95
“But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
The HEART OF PRAYER.
verse 5
Praying in public is not a bad thing, but praying for the public is.
We are not praying to receive praise.
He has just got through warning them to beware of practicing their righteousness before men.
verse 6
But you… there is to be a difference in the way we pray as opposed to those who self righteously heap up empty words.
They have their reward in full.
Beware of practicing things that you get your reward now for.
Here is a good measuring stick.
Did you do for other men?
Would you have prayed that way in private?
Here are our instructions for praying.
Private prayer.
Again this is not a prohibition against public praying, but the assumption here is that our prayer life should mostly be spent by ourself in private.
Pray as a family.
Pray here at church.
But for your spiritual growth you need to spend time in private prayer.
Their is reward for praying when in it done to God and not to man.
Verse 7
Meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do.
Illustration. Lets just take a minute to think about our prayers over the past month.
Were they from your heart? Or are they meaningless repetition?
The things that most to us cannot be done apart from God
Our Father -
Hardly any Systematic Theology spends any length at all on God as Father.
How many sermons have you heard of the Fatherhood of God?
Certainly it is true that we should and do study God as Son and Spirit, and theologians have written countless volumes on these two particular topics.
Christology is the study of Christ.
And Pneumatology is the study of The spirit.
The study of God as Father doesn’t even have a proper name.
but it is also important for us to understand God as Father as well.
We originate from the Father.
The Father sends the Son to accomplish His will.
The Father is in heaven this verse.
The Father sends the Son to reveal Himself
A relationship with The Father comes only through the Son.
What we see in the Son, we have in the Father.
The Father is the fountain of blessings!
The Father planned and predetermine to adopts us into the Family through His son from before the foundation of the world.
The Father who has adopted us into His family holds all things together.
The Father corrects
The Father Comforts us.
The best part of all of that is that he is ours.
