  Knowing God --- EBA  Chapel –   Exodus 6:7     9/12/07

In a world of superficial relationships and facts masquerading as knowledge, it’s easy to treat God as a commodity. We learn certain bits of information about Him and call it “knowing God.” But we can only worship someone we love, and we can only love someone we truly know. I have pondered the question of what it means to know Him. Not to know about God, but to really know Him.

David Jeremiah- Worship, therefore, begins with a heart that has touched the heart of God, a heart that truly knows the one we worship. If we come to know Him as He wants to be known, we will love Him. And if we love Him, worship will not be something we “do” as much as it will flow naturally from a heart filled with the knowledge of and love for God. Worship is an uncontrolled release of expression from a heart that can’t contain its love for God. No relationship will prosper if it is based solely on “things” without an accompanying revelation of the heart and soul. Story of Adrian Rodgers.

But is that how we treat God? We bring Him flowers and chocolates once a week in the form of our tithes and offerings or our presence in the church’s weekly meetings. And then we wonder why our relationship with Him doesn’t grow. If that’s how we seek to develop a relationship with God, some serious problems will, in time, arise.

First, if we don’t really know the true God, we will be tempted to create a God who is convenient for us; one who doesn’t infringe on our ideas of what the Christian life should be.  Jer. 2:13-

Second, if we don’t know the true God for who He really is, we become vulnerable to someone else telling us who God is.

Four things that happen when we come to know God in an intimate way:

1- Knowing God Gives a Sense of Pride – Jer. 9:23-24

      a. What do we boast about the most – (I got a new shirt, new video game – I got the newest addition of Madden)

        1. Gal. 6:14- we shouldn’t boast about anything except the cross

        2. Hosea 6:6- God delights more in people knowing Him than in making sacrifices to Him

        3. Phil. 3:10- Paul wrote to the church that I may know Him

   2- Knowing God Gives a Sense of Purpose – 1 John 2:12-14-

      a. We ought to have a desire to become better Christians.

        1. 1 Peter 2:2- desire the sincere milk of the word ………… grow thereby.

          a. Then you become a spiritual adult, or a “father,” because “you have known Him who is from the beginning.” There is a big gap between being a spiritual child and young man, but an even larger gap between being a young man and a father. Why? Because being a spiritual adult means you move from knowing about God to knowing Him personally.
