Being at the feet of Him  Luke 10:38-42  EBC   7/24/05

Intro: Have you ever met someone who seemed to have a special relationship with Christ? It seemed they possessed a walk that was head and shoulders above mine.

The Gospel mentions a woman named Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. We can learn some things from Mary today. Every time we read about Mary she is at the feet of Jesus.

At Jesus feet we find:

I. A Place of Stillness (10:38-42)

Martha opened her house to Jesus but Mary opened her heart to Jesus. Many times we are so busy for Him that we forget about Him.

  A. We can forget our cares (40)

1- Cumbered – to be distracted, to be driven mentally

      a. when we come into His presence we’ll find the cares of the world aren’t so troubling.

        1. 1 Peter 5:7 -

        2. Phil. 4:6-7 –

  B. We can feed our souls (39)

    1. In His presence we can find strength for our journey. No wonder so many Christians are weak and lacking in vitality. They never take time to be w/Him

      a. 1 Peter 2:2 – as new born babes

      b. 2 Tim. 2:15 – study to show……

  C. We can focus on priorities (42)

    1. The larger Christ becomes the smaller other things become.

      a. Matt. 11:28 -

II. A Place of Supplication (John 11:32) The Lord always helps those that need His help

  A. The Lord’s Invitation to help His people (28) The Lord calls to Him to be a help in a time of need

    1. Ex. 3:7 -

    2. Heb. 4: 15-16 –

    3. Matt. 10:29-31 –

  B. The Lord’s intercession for His people (41-41) Jesus supercedes the laws of nature on behalf of His people. God will move mountains for His people.

III. A Place of Service (John 12:1-8)

Mary is willing to pay whatever price is needful. At His feet we:

  A. Make our sacrifice (3,5) Mary poured on Jesus ointment that was valued at a year’s wages for the average worker. She was willing to give up this treasure because of her love for Jesus.

    1. If we give less than our best, then we had made no sacrifice at all. When we shortchange Jesus with our time, tithes and talents we aren’t showing love for Him.

    2. Rom. 12:1-2 –

    3. Story of Della and Jim

  B. Give up self (3) – wiped His feet

    1. When we come to set at His feet, we will only care what our Lord thinks. He will fill our thoughts and motives. Our lives will be centered on Him

    2. 1 John 4:19 – “we love Him because He first loved us”.

    3. Mark 14:8-9 – she made a statement about herself that has carried on for over 2000 years.
