That you may know… (v. 13)

· This letter is exclusive to Christians
We can know tat we have eternal life.
Similar Instruction in Gospel of John ()

30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;

31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

We can know that we have eternal life.
Clearly the Gospel is to be shared.
You already HAVE ETERNAL LIFE
Just on Temporary Assignment
This news is supposed to be shared...
o We are not floating through life wondering about our fate.
o We are able to KNOW that we have eternal life through faith in Christ.
When you the bible gives you permission to stop worrying about your destination, you have the ability to live a powerful life.

God Hears Our Prayers (v. 14-15)

God Hears Our Prayers (v. 14-15)

· What is the extent of this power life…this confidence that John talks about?
John offers a LOGICAL understanding of our relationship with God through Christ.
· (What is this relationship for?)
· If we ask Him anything (according to His will)
o He hears us.
· And if we know that he hears us
o We know that we have the requests we ask of Him.
Questions:
· What does it mean to ask according to His will?
o If it was according to His will why do I need to pray for it?
James 4:3 ESV
You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
Our prayers should be less about our comfort and more about our pursuit of The Great Commission.
Our Prayers should be less about
Our prayer should be weapon
· John underscores this “new understanding of prayer with a tremendous example.

The Power and Purpose of Prayer (v. 16-18)

· We are called and empowered to pray for struggling Christians.
· “Sin not leading to death.”
o Forgiveness is sought.
o God is willing to forgive that person.
Hebrews 10:26 ESV
For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
o
o This subject worries people – It should worry people.
o John is not giving a lesson on the unforgiveable sin
o He is just saying “I know there is a sin that leads to death, I’m not talking about that.”
“New” Purpose of Prayer
1 John 5:18 ESV
We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.
1 john 1:5
· We know those who have been born of God have an obligation to turn from sin
· BUT!!!!
We also have an obligation to protect our brothers and sister from sin.
While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
o This is called the high priestly prayer
o It is a beautiful prayer for a loving savior
o But what if it’s also a model for our relationships with each other.
