Holiness and Our Wills

We know we need:
conviction and commitment
perseverance and discipline.
to be holy.
Our will ultimately makes each individual choice of whether we will sin or obey.
Why do our wills make the choices that they do? How do we bring our wills into submission and obedience?
Let’s start with the definition of heart that we already looked at already:
The heart denotes all the faculties of the soul as they work together in doing good or evil - the mind, the emotions, the conscience, and the will.
God gave us these in our soul.
But the following happened at the fall.
Our reason was darkened ()
Our desires were entangled ()
Our wills were perverted ()
Ephesians 4:18 ESV
They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
Ephesians 2:3 ESV
among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
John 5:40 ESV
yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
Eph
To reverse this we:
Renew our minds ()
Set our affections on things above ()
Submit our wills to God ()
Romans 12:2 ESV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Colossians 3:1 ESV
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
James 4:7 ESV
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Mind - emotion - will all work together in the perfect original design. With the fall, these things started to work against each other.
NOTE: This is how Bridges is going to separate the soul of man. Not everyone will agree with this.
What forces attack us to distort our will?
Ephesians 2:2 ESV
in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
Satan and the world system
James 1:14 ESV
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
And our own will.
It is why we must be on guard with what we allow to enter our mind and what we allow to influence our emotions.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SHORTCUT TO HOLINESS THAT BYPASSES OR GIVES LITTLE PRIORITY TO A CONSISTENT INTAKE OF THE BIBLE.
sorry for the all caps
Let’s digest proverbs 2:1-12 for a second.
Draw a box around the commanding term and then a circle around what it is predicated to. A line to connect them.
Proverbs 2:1–12 ESV
My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, delivering you from the way of evil, from men of perverted speech,
we have got to guard our desires and constantly be apply the word of God to them.
We have to know where our weakness are and take preventative actions.
That is guarding the rear.
But we need to attack on the offense as well.
Defense and offense is needed
Set your affection on things above. ()
HOW do you do this?
Delight yourselves in the law of God. ()
Colossians 3:1 ESV
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
Have you ever determined to get up early in the morning or determined to exercise or have been forced to do both?
It takes a bit.

Holiness and Faith

Hebrews 11:8 ESV
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
Too often we limit holiness to a separation from impurity.
In a broader sense, holiness is obedience to the will of God in whatever God directs.
Holiness may require deliberate sacrifice and even exposure to danger.
Obedience to the revealed will of God is a step of faith. The old testament used the terms interchangeably.
Hebrews 3:18 ESV
And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?
Heb
Hebrews 3:19 ESV
So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
Often when we see we are to something in God’s word - either positive action or negative avoidance - it takes FAITH.
Let us consider Fame, Fortune, and Happiness
Matthew 20:26–27 ESV
It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,
Be a servant not the one clamoring for fame.
Ill KL “do people make money at instagram” then why do they do it.
1 Timothy 6:17 ESV
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

1 Timothy 6:17–18 ESV
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,
Do not put hope in riches
Do not put hope
Do not put hope in riches
Noah may have exhibited the greatest example of faith when he labored for 140 years.
A. left his land to go to a land God would show him. He didn’t even take the time to check TripAdvisor for good hotels in Israel.
Our life and our faith will not make sense in the world’s eyes.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
