The gifts listed in this passage are both given by the Holy Spirit, and they are manifestations of the Spirit (). Meaning they can only be manifested by those who are baptized in the Spirit.
Spiritual gifts fall into one of 2 categories: verbal or speaking gifts and non-verbal or action gifts (). Jesus operated in both during His earthly ministry (). However, whenever the doing (healing) side became more important than the speaking (teaching) side, Jesus withdrew Himself that He might teach (). This is a reminder that miracles should never supersede preaching/teaching, and our preaching/teaching should never cause us to turn our backs on healing and miracles!
The first two gifts in our list () are essential gifts to Pentecostal preaching and teaching.
Thirdly, all these gifts can be manifested in “everyone” or anyone, but only at the discretion of the Spirit (). We should note that if you are a ministry gift you can manifest the gift God has given you at your discretion (; , ). However, this kind of “authority” requires a deep level of consecration (; , ). The disciples had been given power (, ). However, that power requires consecration to fully exercise.
These first two gifts that are placed at the head of our list in are two gifts that are essential components of Pentecostal preaching and teaching.

#1 – Word of Wisdom

The Word of Wisdom is the ability to supernaturally know the plan of God. In the Epistles, wisdom refers to God’s revelation of Jesus Christ and the things freely given to us in Him (, , , ).

Wisdom vs. Knowledge

Wisdom is closely associated with knowledge. The difference is knowledge refers to facts or information, while wisdom refers to the proper application of those facts ().
We might say that the more knowledge one has, the greater one’s capacity to exercise wisdom! This may be why in the parable of the Talents the Lord took the 1 talent from the lazy servant and gave it to the one who had the most. The man with the most had a greater capacity or wisdom to do more with the talent than the other servant!
As with all these gifts, the word of wisdom comes in a “diversity of administration” and in a “diversity of operations.” In other words, they work differently in people and for different purposes (administrations). For example, the gift of the Word of Wisdom can be manifested in...

Preaching This gift can be used for teaching or preaching the gospel (, , , , ).

Administration This gift can be used to conduct business and other practical matters (). A man or woman with this gift is more valuable than any businessman.

Counsel This gift can be used to provide spiritual counsel or judgment(, , ).

Defense This gift can be used in defense of the faith (, ; ). Being “ready” doesn’t necessarily mean having a rehearsed response for people. In fact, the “answer” that we give to others is best when it is revealed to us suddenly by the Holy Spirit (, , , )!
It’s important to understand that the Word of Wisdom represents wisdom given by the Spirit at a particular moment in time. Those who are given a Word of Wisdom do not become reservoirs of God’s wisdom. All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are deposited/hid in Christ ()!

#2 – Word of Knowledge

Preaching (, , ). In this case, the Word of Wisdom was used by Paul in preaching, particularly revealing those the things that are freely given to us by God (, ).
The Word of Knowledge is the ability to supernaturally know facts (). The Word of Knowledge often works in conjunction with prophesy ().
Administration (). In this case, the Word of Wisdom was used to administrate practical matters of the Church. With this gift men can know the “will of God” in any situation (). Thus, a man with this wisdom is more valuable than any businessman. This gift will result in increase ().
God can at a given time reveal facts that are otherwise hidden to a person (; , ).
Counsel (, , ). In this case, the “judgment” or counsel given by Paul was a demonstration of the Holy Spirit.
The Word of Knowledge is not just confined to prophesy. The Word of Knowledge also works in conjunction with teaching ().
This is because it takes a spiritual gift in order to impart spiritual understanding to others (; ; ).

#3 – Faith

The gift of Faith is a supernatural ability given to a believer, at a specific moment in time, to believe God against all odds (, ).
This was not Peter’s personal faith, but a special manifestation of God’s faith given to Peter at this particular moment (, ).

Special Faith vs Saving Faith

Scripture distinguishes the gift of special faith from the gift of saving faith. The gift of special faith is given only to some believers, while the gift of saving faith is given to all believers ().
The gift of special faith is also distinguished from the fruit of faith (). The gift of special faith is a manifestation of God’s power, but the fruit of faith is an attribute of God’s character. Furthermore, spiritual gifts like faith are given, while spiritual fruit are grown.
Special faith is given only to some believers, but saving faith is given to all believers (). This faith is also distinguished from the faith associated with the fruit of the Spirit (). The gift of special faith is a manifestation of God’s power, but the fruit of faith represents an attribute of God’s character. Furthermore, unlike the fruit of faith, the gift of faith does not grow. It is given!
