ME:
Now, a few weeks ago, I was at home looking for something to snack on. So I grabbed a bag of chips and I noticed they we’re left open(shrugged shoulders). I decided to try them anyway. These things must of been extra crispy because they we’re as hard as a rock to bite into. Also, they had no flavor at all and didn’t taste that good.
WE:
Have you ever ate anything that was stale and lost it’s flavor? It didn’t taste very good did it? If we don’t take care of things or use them by their expiration date, then they can go bad.
I thinkj
I think that can be said of our spiritual life and the anointing that God gives us. We need to keep it fresh and keep the Spirit flowing in our lives. As the oil of anointing is poured out in our lives we also have to keep being filled by the same Spirit.
This is what I believe God is talking about here in Let’s read it together...
(ESV)
8 but you, O Lord, are on high forever. 9 For behold, your enemies, O Lord, for behold, your enemies shall perish; all evildoers shall be scattered. 10 But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; you have poured over me fresh oil. 11 My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies; my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants. 12 The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
GOD:

The Excellence of the Freshness in the Oil of Anointing

There is nothing like getting something brand new. Something that hasn’t been opened or used. When we get something like this, it usually has a longer shelf life because of the condition it is. People might think that way about their walk with Christ. They started off with this fresh faith that was on fire. Then over time that excitement started to fade away before they could even realize it, and they have become stale and lukewarm. To keep the anointing oil of the Holy Spirit fresh in us…there are a couple things we need to do.
Freshness in our devotions
Our text is in , says...”I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”
What I am trying to say is that the Spirit had not departed David, but at times he needed a refreshing; a renewal.
David is speaking about a fresh anointing; a renewal.David had been anointed as king of Israel from his youth. In Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him, and the Bible says the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. The Spirit had not departed David, but at times he needed a refreshing; a renewal.
We live in a time when many in the church have been anointed at one time they have received the Holy Ghost, and Satan has come to steal, kill, and destroy but Jesus has come to give you life, life to the full and more abundantly.
\
Their is an anointing thief out there. Satan wants to stop the anointing of God in your life, because he knows that it is the anointing that destroys the yolk. He wants to prevent you from receiving the anointing of being a prayer warrior and an intercessor. Satan wants to prevent you from receiving the anointing of being a missionary. Satan wants to prevent you from receiving the anointing of being a pastor.
Friend, their is an anointing thief out there. Satan wants to stop the anointing of God in your life, because he knows that it is the anointing that destroys the yolk. But the Psalmist wrote in our text, I shall be anointed with fresh oil. That means he had already been anointed.
The quickest path extinguish the fire of the anointing is to have a devotional life that is dry. We do that best by reading Gods word and studying it but, not doing anything about it. Not putting it into practice. Not obeying what it teaches us through the voice of the Holy Spirit. Not applying it to our lives. Its so easy to get in the motions of reading our bible without acting on what it says. We’ve talked about what the anointing means. To anoint someone is to smear a liquid on someone or something. Usually that liquid is oil which represents the Holy Spirit. I think of it like this...
We take sunblock and smear it on our bodies and rub it in, so we won’t get burned by the heat. It’s the same with the Holy Spirit. It is smeared, rubbed, and applied in us and prevents us from being burned from an eternity in hell. That’s what the oil of anointing does for us.
-it sn’t a matter of studying different parts of the bible or praying different prayers
-it’s a matter of hearing God speak and actually doing what he says
Freshness in our emotions
The anointing gives us a freshness in our emotions.
-the oil of anointing will move us
It will move our emotions, will, and intellect and our entire being.
It will engrain in us a compassion for the hurting, lonely, and the least of these.
It will move our hearts for the lost and the prodigals sons.
It will move us to cry out to the living God to have mercy on their souls.
It will move us to our knees in prayer.
It will move us to tears and repentance as we turn from our sin and turn to the living God who offers us forgiveness and eternal life
-We will not be able to contain God and keep him for ourselves
We will be like the prophet Jeremiah who could not keep silent about his God because he was burning within him. We will be like the Apostle Paul who said in the book of Romans “I am not Ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God that brings Salvation. We will be like creation itself for, Jesus said if His disciples remained silent that the very stones will cry out for the living God.
-We will express our love for Him in outward expressions of worship
When the anointing and power of God is on us we will show outward expressions of worship. We will do that in praise by lifting our hands in worship, by bowing down to His heavenly throne at his altar and by shouting unto God the cries of our heart.
We will do that by displaying the fruit of the Spirit through our actions.
We will do that by loving God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength.
We will do that by loving our neighbor as our-self

The Exit of the Freshness in the Oil of Anointing

illustr-
Oil like a lot of things, has a shelf life. It has an expiration date. Oil, eventually loses its flavor and aroma, if it is not used in the time, purpose, and atmosphere it was made for.
Also, think about the oil we put in our cars. We need to change it every three months and every couple thousand miles. An oil change consists of removing the old oil from a vehicle's engine and replacing it with new, fresh oil
Automobile engines have many moving parts. As these parts move and rub against each other, the force of friction creates heat. Oil lubricates the engine and absorbs heat, allowing the internal parts to work together effectively without overheating. Over time, engine oil breaks down and wears out. When it does, it becomes less effective at lubricating the engine and absorbing heat
In other words, the oil co-operates with the internal parts as they work together to accomplish the purpose of the vehicle.
Over time, engine oil breaks down and wears out. When it does, it becomes less effective at lubricating the engine and absorbing heat
That sounds a lot like how our relationship with God works doesn’t it? He has given us free will and a responsibility to respond to His grace as we work together to accomplish the purpose He has for our lives. This is something that we need to do daily as we receive a constant infilling of the Holy Spirit.
Now there are two main reasons why our relationship with God can feel dry, flat, empty, and lack a freshness that we have experienced before.
The first reason
Freshness of the Anointing leaves because of known sin in our life
Have you ever tried to hide something from someone? Maybe it was a secret that you knew, or something that you didn’t want someone to find. Whatever it is, when we are hiding something, we just aren’t the same around people. When we are living in sin, we know it & God knows it. We know it because the Holy Spirit speaks to us and gives us a prompting and nudge in our heart. This hinders the flow of our anointing and hurts our relationship with God and others. It causes our spiritual state and the anointing oil to go stale. The longer we stay in sin, the harder it will be to break free from it or even recognize it.
Now a second reason is...
Freshness leaves because we enter in a specific time of preparation and testing.
We can be doing everything right. Going to church, tithing, reading the bible and praying. But still feel stale in our relationship with God. Sometimes God put’s us through deseart experience because he is preparing us for something great.
There is a poem from St. John of the Cross that is called “The Dark Night of Soul” that describes his season of feeling distant and forsaken by the Lord. You see people all throughout scripture experience it such as Job, King David, and the prophets. This was all in preparation of something greater that has coming in their lives!
So how these guys get out of that dry and stale state they we’re in? Also, we find ourselves feeling this way, how can we be refreshed?
You see people all throughout scripture experience it such as Job, King David, the disciples and even Jesus on the cross when he cried out oh God why have you forsaken me.

The Renewal of the Freshness in the Oil of Anointing

Renewal comes when we rest in him(Don’t try to earn or work for Gods approval).
We can only experience renewal when we make a real commitment to Christ and re-dedicate our lives to Him. Everyday, we are all in need of a spiritual renewal because every day we do battle with the flesh, the world, and the devil. That trio is always trying to choke the life right out of us. we received through the “washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (). Like silver exposed to the elements, we grow tarnished and dull spiritually. We need to constantly renew our faith in Christ. This dullness and staleness comes when we neglect our relationship with Christ and put him on the back-burner of our lives.
Renewal also comes when we confess our sin(s) and repent.
This is a life long process as we day by day go to the Lord in prayer and confess our sin to him and ask for forgiveness and turn from our sin and turn to God. We must cleanse ourselves from all unrighteousness so we can walk in the Holiness of the Lord!
tells us that our sin has separated us from God. It breaks our fellowship and communion with the father. That is a grave consequence o sin. It detests God and it is very offensive to Him and He cannot and will not be in the presence of sin. If we keep on sinning and doing the same thing over and over again without heeding to the voice of God. Then we will seer our conscience to the point that we longer feel God’s presence. The Holy Spirit will stop speaking to you until you deal with your sin and repent.
YOU:
So where are you in your faith journey? Are you stale, dry, and tasteless or are you fresh and full of flavor? Do you need a restoration of His presence or a renewal of fellowship with Him?
God tells us “If we would humble themselves and seek His face and turn from our sin, That He will forgive us and heal our land”. That promise is for you today. It doesn’t matter how long you been a Christian, how long you have been going to church. God honors humility above a haughty spirit. He honors the poor in spirit above the prideful spirit. He wants to hear from you. He wants you to come to his table of grace.
WE:
What if we came to him in true humility and our sin at his altar. Expecting to see breakthrough, expecting Him to perform wonders, signs, and miracles. Expecting him for that fresh oil of the anointing where we would experience His presence like never before?
