Numbers 24:17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.

As we read this verse, it sounds like everything is going to happen at the same time and that helps us understand why the nation of Israel was expecting a Proud King to come conquering.

Compare to Lot’s family in Sodom - They had to be dragged out of the city!

3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
The Magi were at least students of the stars and had noticed this new star.
Perhaps they were believers of Jehovah God, but that seems unlikely as they were not familiar with the prophecies and they only say they had seen the star. But they did say that they knew it was the star of a king!
Again, God’s desire has always been to see all people redeemed!
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

They followed what they had and sought for more light
We try to ignore the light we do have and can’t be bothered to seek greater understanding (light).
