Maturity

What is sin?
-Missing the mark of God’s standard
Romans 3:23 NLT
23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
a. God’s standard is Holy
-Doing what I am not supposed to do
-Not doing what I am supposed to do
James 4:17 NLT
17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
James 4:17
2. Why do I remove sin?
-It breaks down my relationship with God
Joshua 7:10–12 NLT
10 But the Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying on your face like this? 11 Israel has sinned and broken my covenant! They have stolen some of the things that I commanded must be set apart for me. And they have not only stolen them but have lied about it and hidden the things among their own belongings. 12 That is why the Israelites are running from their enemies in defeat. For now Israel itself has been set apart for destruction. I will not remain with you any longer unless you destroy the things among you that were set apart for destruction.
Joshua
Joshua 7:10
Joshua 7:10–12 NLT
10 But the Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying on your face like this? 11 Israel has sinned and broken my covenant! They have stolen some of the things that I commanded must be set apart for me. And they have not only stolen them but have lied about it and hidden the things among their own belongings. 12 That is why the Israelites are running from their enemies in defeat. For now Israel itself has been set apart for destruction. I will not remain with you any longer unless you destroy the things among you that were set apart for destruction.
3. How do I consistently remove sin?
How
a. I must recognize sin in my life
Joshua 7:19–21 NLT
19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, by telling the truth. Make your confession and tell me what you have done. Don’t hide it from me.” 20 Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. 21 Among the plunder I saw a beautiful robe from Babylon, 200 silver coins, and a bar of gold weighing more than a pound. I wanted them so much that I took them. They are hidden in the ground beneath my tent, with the silver buried deeper than the rest.”
Joshua 7:19-21
Luke 5:8 NLT
8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.”
-The Bible tells me
-Other believers tell me
-The Church tells me
-God tells me
b. I must resist the sin
Joshua 7:24-25
Joshua 7:24–25 NLT
24 Then Joshua and all the Israelites took Achan, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, daughters, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats, tent, and everything he had, and they brought them to the valley of Achor. 25 Then Joshua said to Achan, “Why have you brought trouble on us? The Lord will now bring trouble on you.” And all the Israelites stoned Achan and his family and burned their bodies.
James 4
James 4:7–10 NLT
7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. 9 Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
-Submit myself to God
-Wash my hands/ Purify my heart
-Grieve for my sins
c. I must refocus on God
Joshua 8:1 NLT
1 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Take all your fighting men and attack Ai, for I have given you the king of Ai, his people, his town, and his land.
Joshua 8:
:
2 Peter 1:4–10 NLT
4 And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. 5 In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 8 The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins. 10 So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away.
-Escape from temptation
-Make every effort to add...
*self -control
*perseverance
*love
-Keep my eyes on Jesus
~I can be victorious in the battle of sin~
James 1:12 NLT
12 God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
a. When I recognize sin before I act on it
b. When I learn to resist and stand firm against sin before I act on it.
c. When I learn to put my life in the Hands of God twenty-four/seven, and focus my life on Him
The Wrap Up:
Maturity is recognizing my faults before they happen, and when I do mess up to not continually do the same act. When I see my failures, I need to repent and resist. I must allow God’s forgiveness to rule in my heart while I refocus my mind, heart, and life for His will.
Question?
Will I rely on the strength of Christ to make me mature by taking my many failures and turning them into forward progress?
Romans 7:21–25 NLT
21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God’s law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.
