Angels, Stars and Stands

Revelation 2:1 HCSB
“Write to the angel of the church in Ephesus: “The One who holds the seven stars in His right hand and who walks among the seven gold lampstands says:
Whenever we study anything in the book of Revelation we have to be ready for some rather heavy symbolism. We also have to look at what original words mean.
When we think of an angel we think of?
Angel. Messenger of God or supernatural being, either good or evil, with greater than human powers.
BEB
ἄγγελος, ου, ὁ ‘messenger’. ① a human messenger serving as an envoy, an envoy, one who is sent ⓐ by humans
while there are three options for what angel could mean one being each church having a guardian angel, one being the messengers sent to deliver the letter the most likely interpretation is that the angel is the pastor of the church, tasked with bringing the Lords message to the people on a regular basis.

† ἀγγέλλω. In Nestle and Soden read with BL: οἱ δοῦλοι ὑπήντησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες, ὅτι ὁ παῖς αὐτοῦ ζῇ. Against this א Dlat.: ὑπηντ. αὐτ. καὶ ἤγγειλαν ὅτι, ACK: καὶ ἀνήγγειλαν (λ 33 καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν) λέγοντες ὅτι. Tischendorf VIII (I, 782) pleads for אD: the rare ἤγγειλαν is replaced either by λέγοντες or by ἀνήγγ- or ἀπήγγ-, and thus both emendations are blended. But neither Tischendorf nor Soden knows any text which offers ἀναγγ. or ἀπαγγ. without the elucidating λέγοντες; hence the rise of deviations is more readily explained from the Nestle text. In any case, whether originally or by way of correction, the ἤγγειλαν indicates a solemn development. It is to be explained by what has been said about ἀναγγέλλειν and ἀπαγγέλλειν in accounts of miracles, and it thus denotes the proclamation of miracles. The only sure attestation of ἀγγέλλω in the NT is in . It is never used in the apostolic fathers. Its rarity is to be explained …
The stars are the angels or pastors the lampstands are the churches themselves.

33.195 ἄγγελοςa, ου m: (derivative of ἀγγέλλω ‘to tell, to inform,’ 33.189) a person who makes an announcement—‘messenger.’38 ἀπελθόντων δὲ τῶν ἀγγέλων Ἰωάννου ἤρξατο λέγειν ‘after John’s messengers had left, (Jesus) began to speak’ .
Revelation 2:2 HCSB
I know your works, your labor, and your endurance, and that you cannot tolerate evil. You have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and you have found them to be liars.
Jesus knows us…he is so interested in us that he knows what we do he follows us…etc…Just like that first crush that you have that first love that you can’t get out of your brain. that first kiss all of the firsts that burn themselves into your brain.

Revelation 2:2–3 HCSB
I know your works, your labor, and your endurance, and that you cannot tolerate evil. You have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and you have found them to be liars. You also possess endurance and have tolerated many things because of My name
They are doing a good job right. I mean look at that list.
Text Comparison
ἀγγέλῳ angelō
It’s important to understand that the church in Ephesus was an important one. It was the center of pauls mission, John lived there, it was the best port of entry to Asia minor.
ἄγγελος angelosangel
Ephesus was a great church they were doing great things. They knew what they believed they didn’t shy away from it. They were not wishy washy when it came to what they believed. They were totally commited to Christ and to each other. They kept their teaching pure, they didn’t tolerate false ideas of Who jesus was and what his work on the cross did. They were good at building up the saints. They knew all the right things to do and so they did them. They went throught he motions of a walk with Christ and really did it well…BUT.

The Grand Gesture

Revelation 2:5 HCSB
Remember then how far you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. Otherwise, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.
NDSM noun, dative, singular, masculine
In our love lives there is this thing called the grand gesture.
G32 Greek Strong’s
LN 33.195 Louw-Nida
Grand gestures are what we do when we need to make an impression, when we need to fix something, or when we want to show a person how much we really care how much we really love them
The Ephesians needed a grand gesture because they forgot.
angel noun
Apocalypse Revelation
Revelation 2:4 HCSB
But I have this against you: You have abandoned the love you had at first.
Letter, Community 2:1–3:22
There are different interpretations given as to what that first love was. Some think they lost their love for each other …but the fact that they took such great care of making sure they met together and that they had sound teaching makes that unlikely. Other’s that they left their love of Christ also problematic because of how important it was for them to be sure his teachings were shared properly. NO the first love that this passage most likely indicates is that love of sharing christ with others. The idea that they are to be a light to a world that is full of darkness. Jesus makes it a point to walk through the candle stick the light that the churches are to be to a dark world.
Everhohne remembers firsts when it comes to their love life. We should all remember the firsts when it comes to our relaionsihp with Jesus...
