The Audience

Our letter gives us very little if no info about the Church at Ephesus. There is no info really about the circumstances of writing this letter except that Paul is writing from prison and is sending Tychicus as his personal messenger. In other parts of the New Testament we learn that Timothy pastors this Church.
Revelation 2:2–4 NASB95
‘I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false; and you have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake, and have not grown weary. ‘But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

Their Designation

Saints (Holy Ones)- set apart to God, or belonging to God. His special ones.
1 Peter 2:9 NASB95
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
The word for saint is the same word used for the furniture in the OT Tabernacle system.
This is a high designation!
-Who are Saints?
All believers are saints. This is no special class of believers in Christ that are higher than others, the scripture shows that anyone who is in Christ is counted as a saint! We don’t pray to saints or worship them, that’s no where in the Bible! We honor people, but we worship God! and Him only!
Not everyone is a saint, but only Christians are God’s special ones. This doesn’t make us prideful because there’s nothing about us that deserves this! It’s due to our union with Christ!
1 Corinthians 1:2 NASB95
To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
Romans 1:7 NASB95
to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
-How do they become Saints?
It is a work of God. It’s not something you earn or deserve, it’s a gift of grace. “Saints by calling!”God attributes to us sainthood!
We all started our as sinners! That was our designation! Even on our best day, we are sinners in God’s sight. We have defied God’s law and abused his character and goodness! We were children of wrath.
Romans 3:10–12 NASB95
as it is written, There is none righteous, not even one; There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.”
Romans 3:10 NASB95
as it is written, There is none righteous, not even one;
Romans 3:10–11 NASB95
as it is written, There is none righteous, not even one; There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God;
1 Corinthians 1:2 NASB95
To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
That was the purpose of the Christ’s coming, he reconciled us to God.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
1 Corinthians 1:31 NASB95
so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 1:30 NASB95
But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,
1 Corinthians 1:21 NASB95
For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
1 Corinthians
God has now graciously attributed to you the status of holy! Saint. Even on your worst day, you are still counted righteous in God’s sight!
Romans
Romans 1:7 NASB95
to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
When we believe on Christ we are justified, or declared not guilty! Not only that, we are declared righteous in his sight!
Illustration
Explain bank account!
In heaven’s currency and not earth’s!
That’s how complete the work of Christ for you was. This is acceptance, this is our new identity, saints. Seen as being righteous as the very Son of God! We have his righteousness!
Application
Believers
Learn to rest in this! On your worst day, you are accepted in Christ! Let this drive you to love and live holy!
Un-believers
You can have this today!
Philippians 3:9 NASB95
and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
SIDE NOTE: If this doesn’t shock you, you don’t understand the holiness of God!
NEXT: All Christians are Saints by experience:
2. Faithful- reliable or believing
This doesn’t mean that christians always act saintly, but as the pattern of their lives, they are saints by experience, they pursue holiness and righteousness. Through the new birth, God has given us new desires and we can’t go on sinning. This defines every true believer.
Matthew 10:22 NASB95
“You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.

Their Inheritance

Grace & Peace
We have been given this in Christ and we will continue to experience these throughout our lives!
Grace- unmerited favor, kindness not earned. You have been given grace, and will continue to receive it.
Psalm 103:10 NASB95
He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
Romans 8:31–32 NASB95
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?
peace- absence of war. War with God. We experience the peace of God the absence of war with Him. And God gives us His peace. Non-Christians are at war with God whether they are conscience of it or not. Believers enjoy as a outcome of grace, peace with God!
Romans 8:31–35 NASB95
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
This is the Inheritance of Believers!
Turn to Him! Don’t hide!
