I) Background – vs.1-18

A) Jesus heals a man at pool of Bethesda on Sabbath Day
B) Jews criticize the man for carrying his pallet, but he tells them that Jesus told him to do that
C) They persecute Jesus for teaching this
D) Jesus replies that His Father is working (on the Sabbath) and He is also
E) Jews seek to execute Jesus for making Himself equal with the Father

II) Son gives life – vs.19-29

A) Son only does that which He sees the Father doing – vs.19-21;
John 7:16–18 ESV
So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.
B) Son judges all to receive honor even as the Father – vs.22-24
C) There is a resurrection now in which those who hear the voice of the Son will be given life – vs.25-27 – since the Father has given life to the Son in Himself
D) There is a resurrection to come in which all the dead will hear His voice and come forward to be judged – vs.28-29
E) One resurrection confirms the other –
Acts 17:30–31 ESV
The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

III) Witnesses of the Son – vs.30-47

A) Son is not a solitary witness – vs.30-31; ; ;
John 8:13–14 ESV
So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
Deuteronomy 17:6 ESV
On the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses the one who is to die shall be put to death; a person shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.
Deuteronomy 19:15 ESV
“A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established.
B) Witness of John – vs.32-35; ;
John 1:29–34 ESV
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”
John 3:26–30 ESV
And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. He must increase, but I must decrease.”
C) Witness of the works – vs.36-38 – the witness of the Father –
John 11:47–48 ESV
So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
D) Witness of the scriptures – vs.39-40;
Luke 4:16–21 ESV
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
E) Glory from men or from God? – vs.41-47 – those who seek glory from men will never believe the Son
Concl: When we consider how the Jews had perverted the will of God, it is inevitable that Jesus would come into severe conflict with them as he spoke the truth from God. This was most evident when He spoke of His true nature as the Son.
