There’s Power in the Church

Mark 4:35-41

The Church Has the Power To Affect All People

Introduction:

1.     Is there Power in Church the Today?

2.     Do you expect Great Things when You Come To Church?

3.     Do you believe Church is necessary for unbelievers?

4.     Could the world today survive without the Church?

Read Mark 4:35-41

35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

1.     There is more than one boat on the sea

2.     All the other fishermen/sailors were using buckets to empty their boats but Christ stood up in the disciples boat and said, “Peace, be still!” everything calmed down, affecting all that were on the sea.

3.     The church is no different than that small boat.  If Christ is at the center, the church and everyone else will be affected.

Body:

1.     When the Church TURNS to Christ

a.     Read Mark 4:37-38

37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

Application:

Is your first response to turn to Christ when storms come in your life?

As a church, if we are going to affect others then we must be turning to Christ daily!

2.     When the church TRUSTS in Christ

a.     Read Mark 4:39-40

39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”

Application:

When Christ spoke everything calmed down.

Are you trusting Christ with the things in your life?

Where is the rent money going to come from this month?

What about a job situation?  The groceries?  An unsaved friend?

1.     He Turned to Christ, He Trusted in Christ

c.      If We really want to see St. Joe, Stevensville, Benton Harbor experience the Power of God, it has to start right here at Oakridge Baptist Church.  We cannot wait for someone else, we must Turn to Christ and Trust in Him.

Conclusion:

3.  When the Church GIVES their all to Christ

Illustration:

A man lost in the desert dying for a drink of water stumbled upon an old shack, a ram shackled, windowless, roofless, weather-beaten old shack.

He saw an old rusty pump about 15 feet from where he sat, he began to pump but now water appeared.

Then he saw a sign and an old jug.  “You have to prime the pump with all the water in this jug, my friend.  P.S.  Be sure you fill the jug again before you leave.”

Believe me, it really works.  You have to give it all away before you can get anything back.”

There is Power in the Church and if we want to see other people experience that power we need to Turn to Christ, Trust in Christ, and Give it all to Christ.
