Romans 1:8–15 ESV
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. 9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you 10 always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— 12 that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

PRAY
S.T.A.R.T.
Solemnly praise and recognize the greatness of our God and Savior connected to the Biblical text being preached
God our Father in Heaven we rejoice that this scripture is true. We are eternally thankful that the faith of these Romans has reached us. Even today the faith of these Romans speaks to us. May your Holy Spirit fall upon us and grant us the same legacy. Oh that our faith would echo through generations to come!
Touch upon the subject of corporate sin and confess any shortcomings the body has committed related to the Biblical text to be preached
We come before you our Holy one asking forgiveness for our lack of faith. We believe but we ask that you might help our unbelief oh God. Forgive us for the little view we have of you.
Ask God to help the body/local church to hear and apply the truths of the Biblical text to be preached
As we look at your Holy Word we would ask that you would cause us to have greater faith, faith that would be worthy of being proclaimed. We ask that you would help us pray more fervently for this faith and for those who need to receive it. We ask that you would cause our faith to be attractive to all those around us, and that our faith would be one that strengthens one another.
Review and remind the audience of the key related passages to the Biblical text being preached
God we praise you for your Word given though Paul to the Romans and even to us this day.
Transition to the opening of the sermon and the Biblical text to be preached
We close in begging your blessing on these passages in !
Psalm 103:6 ESV
6 The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.
Psalm 96:6–7 ESV
6 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. 7 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
Psalm 130:6 ESV
6 my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

The New American Commentary: Romans 2. Paul’s Desire to Visit Rome (1:8–15)

We are reminded that the real work of the ministry is prayer. Preaching is more a result of the ministry of prayer than it is a ministry itself. A sermon that does not rise from intense and heart-searching prayer has no chance of bearing real fruit.

See to what degree of modesty his pious heart submitted itself, so that he disdained not to seek confirmation from unexperienced beginners: nor did he speak dissemblingly, for there is no one so void of gifts in the Church of Christ, who is not able to contribute something to our benefit: but we are hindered by our envy and by our pride from gathering such fruit from one another. Such is our high-mindedness, such is the inebriety produced by vain reputation, that despising and disregarding others, every one thinks that he possesses what is abundantly sufficient for himself.

COMMUNION
What it stands for
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 ESV
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Warning
1 Corinthians 11:27–29 ESV
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
Almighty God, we come to you this morning admitting our unworthiness to partake of this holy meal. And yet, with confidence, sincerity, truth, and joy, we come to this Supper through the sacred blood of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. We praise you for your mercy and grace, and ask you through this bread and cup to commune with us now as we commune with you and one another. Amen.
Hughes, R. Kent. The Pastor's Book: A Comprehensive and Practical Guide to Pastoral Ministry (p. 431). Crossway. Kindle Edition.
Communion Verses
Matthew 26:26 ESV
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”
Lord Jesus, you said: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh” (). Shocking words, prophetic of the cross. Now as we eat this bread, help us to ride the symbol to the deepest reality. You bore our sins in your body, you became sin for us, you suffered death in your body, and you were resurrected in your body. Bread of heaven, we feast in remembrance of your body given for us. Amen.
Hughes, R. Kent. The Pastor's Book: A Comprehensive and Practical Guide to Pastoral Ministry (p. 436). Crossway. Kindle Edition.
Matthew 26:27–28 ESV
27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Our gracious God, we thank you this day for the new covenant, the covenant sealed through the blood of Jesus Christ. And we drink this cup in remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice for our sins, asking him even now, through the Spirit, to commune with us as we commune with each other. With grateful hearts, O Christ, we drink to you and of you. Amen.
Hughes, R. Kent. The Pastor's Book: A Comprehensive and Practical Guide to Pastoral Ministry (pp. 436-437). Crossway. Kindle Edition.
COMMUNION TOGETHER
Fellowship With Each Other
Acts 2:42–47 ESV
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Benediction

2 Corinthians 13:14 ESV
14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
