Ephesians 4:15–16 ESV
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Speak Love
Real Love is Rooted in Truth
Matthew
Matthew 7:13–14 ESV
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
b. Truth without love has limited value
c. Relationships increase our ability to speak truth in love
“There are two kinds of authority leaders possess: positional authority and relational authority.
Positional authority is the authority that comes from title, rank, and status. It’s the authority you get from the hierarchy of an organization. Relational authority is different. It’s the authority that comes from the trust and respect of others. It cannot be demanded, but is given freely (or not) by your followers.”
Bill Zipp
i. Positional Authority
ii. No Authority
iii. Relational Authority
2. Growing in Truth and Love
-You have to know truth and love
a. Requires action
-Speaking is an action verb
-”Practice what you preach”
Matthew 7:3–5 ESV
Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
b. Growth occurs when we properly function
i. If growth is missing, pieces are not aligned correctly.
John 15:1–2 ESV
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
3. Truth and Love lead to Christ
i. Christ is the Head of the body
-ex. Vision casting, Authority, Practice/Traditions, etc.
ii. The Church must point people to Christ
-We are called to point people to Christ, not change their behavior
-If behavior modification is the goal, people just get better at hiding their sin. When Christ is the goal, life transformation begins.
