12 But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;
12 Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel,
Paul was in prison. Imagine them reading this letter from Paul who is in prison. How do you think it made them feel about Paul’s circumstance?
a. But Paul lets them know that his circumstances is great for the gospel.
c. Paul may have been captive, but the gospel wasn’t.
d. How could this be? If Paul was not where he was, those keeping him captive may have never heard the gospel.
f. Paul had a great outlook on life.
13 So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;
13 so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else,
Even while imprisonment, Paul saw himself as under the authority of Jesus, not man.

a. He knew that Jesus would work out his circumstances.
“all the the palace” which is the “praetorian guard”
b. This was the elite Roman soldiers, the emperors bodyguards. Paul’s time in prison allowed these soldiers to hear the gospel.
c. We are not told where Paul was imprisoned when he wrote this, but it seem it may be Rome.
d. If Paul could reach the guards with the gospel, the gospel would reach their families.

14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

Paul was a great leader, even before he became a Christian.
a. Paul as a great leader, people followed his leadership.
b. He didn’t want people to give up, but keep going on, moving forward.
c. Paul was such a great leader that even in prison it gave his followers even more courage to share the gospel without fear.
15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
Philippians 1:
15 Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will;
Some preached from envy and strife.
a. The word strife translates “factious rivalry”
b. Paul here is talking about those “missionaries” who saw themselves as Paul’s rivals.
c. This happens today with people in ministry, and churches.
d. “some from good will” To preach with good will, is to preach with a sincere desire for the well being of others.
16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:
