"How Will You Live

 Your Life?"

  Luke 4:1-14

  Wednesday, January 03, 2001

* This episode comes after 30 years of _______________.

  • It is a test of how Jesus will _________ and ________________.
  • Don't overlook the role of the Holy Spirit -- Satan is not the central figure here!  It was the Holy Spirit who literally drove Jesus into the wilderness area to be tested.
  • Agree or disagree?    God tests, Satan tempts?    What is the difference?
  • The testing and tempting experiences come as Jesus is at a particularly vulnerable time:

è     Emotionally

è     Socially

è     Physically

1.     The Test & Temptation of ________________

(Luke 4:3-4 NIV)  "The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." {4} Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone.'""

v         Your character is what you really _______, not what you pretend to be.

v         D.L. Moody said, "Character is what you are in the ________."

v         To Jesus:   "How will you use your power and gifts?"

v         The Bottom Line:   We have basic ____________ _________ in life.  They need to be met and cared  about.   How will we seek to meet our basic human needs?

v         Satan's Temptation:    Don't worry about _______ you get your needs met.  The most important thing is that you be taken care of.

v         God's Test:   Will you __________ Me to provide for your needs in My way and in My time?

2.   The Test & Temptation of ___________________

(Luke 4:5-8 NIV)  "The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. {6} And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. {7} So if you worship me, it will all be yours." {8} Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'""

  • Much of our over talking, interrupting, gossip, joking, bragging, and shouting is a cover-up for our __________________.

  • Humanity is incurably ______________.  Even if we reject God we will turn around and create a god to fill the void in our lives.

  • Whoever I ________ to the most will wind up having the most influence over me.  This principle is multiplied endless times when it comes to the object of my worship.

  • Satan knew that if Jesus worshipped Him, he would have Him under his ___________l.

  • Paris Reidhead said, "Most Christians do not have fellowship with God -- they have fellowship with each other about God."

  • Satan's Temptation:  Will you  bow down to me in order to achieve personal __________?

  • God's Test:  Will you true in your worship and be patient enough to trust Me to  __________ you in My time?

3.      The Test & Temptation of __________________

(Luke 4:9-12 NIV)  "The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here. {10} For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; {11} they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" {12} Jesus answered, "It says: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'""

a.                             When you strip away everything from your life, what are your real resources?

b.                            Another way to ask it is, "On what/whom do you really ____________?"

c.                             In the context of Jesus' ministry, the question was, "How will you minister and deal with people?"   Would Jesus be willing to turn God's power into a ___________ show for the entertainment of the crowds and for the personal benefit of Jesus?

d.                           Satan's Temptation:  Will you use your power to draw a crowd and ______________ Yourself?

e.                            God's Test:  Will you trust Me for the direction of Your life and ____________ to make a show of My power?

"When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time."

(Luke 4:13 NIV)
