Verse 1- Isaiah again states that what he is saying is from the Lord whether anyone believes it our not.
God’s arm, that is His strength, is revealed.
Were it not for God deciding to show Himself, we would know know anything about Him.
Therefore it is a serious claim on Isaiah’s part, or anyone else to say “Thus saith the Lord.”
In Isaiah 52.10 God is said to have revealed his mighty arm, or his strength and power to the Nations.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, used this phrase as part of the Magnificat, where she declares to Elizabeth, that God has chosen her as the vessel through whom Messiah would be born.
When we claim that God has given us the Bible, and that it is all true, that is a strong statement, that requires not only a nod of the head, but our hearts, our wills, our minds, our everything.
Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, may all.
I want to focus on
Carried and bore- synonyms (lift up and carry)
Sickness- This word shows up 24 times in the Old Testament and a big majority of those times is points to diseases, illness, and sickness.
pain- pain suffering would grief
(KJV has it has griefs and sorrows)
Contrast what HE did versus the “We response”
We regarded Him (Isaiah and the initial hearers, and us by extension)
stricken, struck down, afflicted.... BY GOD.
In other words Christ suffering would be misunderstood as being punishment for something HE had done.
One of the the themes of Isaiah 53 is that whatever is happening to this suffering Savior is not accidental, but BY the Hand of God and FOR our benefit.
Verse 5 Bears out what was done for US
Punished of our Crimes
Pierced- or wounded… FOR OUR transgressions---- lawbreaking..... rebellion, wrongdoing.
Beaten Down For Our Twistedness
Crushed- Beaten down until crushed… FOR OUR sin… our guilt… our punishment… Iniquity is related to the idea of something being twisted… We often refer to something someone does that is so out of bounds.
We will call that act or that person TWISTED.
Jesus was crushed for our twistedness.
Punishment For Our Peace
Disciplined or corrected so that we could have peace.
(peace, prosperity, success)....
Wounded For Our Healing
Wounded— Scourged, etc. Healing… physicians, recovery cured, disappeared, repaired.
Matthew definitely saw the healing ministry of Jesus as a fulfillment of Isaiah’s Messianic Prophecy.
But note that Jesus was doing these things before the Atonement.
In other words the emphasis is on the ONE doing those things, not some universal guarantee to healing in the death of Christ.
Here the healing Jesus brings is clearly healing from SIN sickness.
Three possibilities from this passage
The Atonement Provides Healing Now Always
There is a teaching out there that there is “healing in the atonement.”
In other words, the death of Jesus guarantees our health.
(If we get rid of all the sin in our lives and have enough faith)
There is NO “right” to healing because you are a believer.
“Healing in the atonement” is a fairly new concept in the modern sense that it is used.
It goes back to EW Kenyon.
Kenyon is the Father of the “Name it and Claim it.”
He taught that no Christian should ever be sick.
He died in a coma of a tumor.
Kenneth Hagin plagarized and popularized the teachings of Kenyon and became known as POP Hagan.
People like Copeland, Creflo Dollar, and Joyce Meyers are his disciples.
Hagin had a heart attack in 2003 and spent the last few weeks of his life in Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, before dying in the hospital .
"Not agreeing with what is predominantly taught growing up the way I did, I had a lot of animosity toward the church," he says.
"One time there was a woman with cancer, and they were telling her, 'All you need to do is say you're healed.'
And she tried to so hard, and tried and tried and tried, but she eventually died of cancer, and she died thinking that she didn't have enough faith to be healed.
And that really resonated with me.
I still think about that to this day."-

The atonement is reconciliation between God and man by the death of Jesus.
Which leads to the second possibilitiy
The Healing Mentioned Is For Sin ONLY
This is certainly the emphasis of this passage.
But as I mentioned Matthew uses this Isaiah passage to speak of physical healing
The Healing Mentioned Includes Physical and Spiritual Healing In Heaven
The teaching of Scripture is that our bodies are perishing because of sin and they must die or be transformed to get our forever bodies.
This is what I believe.
They wounding and beating and crucifixion accomplished ALL that is needed for me to be completely WHOLE and RIGHT WITH GOD in EVERY WAY, in heaven when my glorification is complete, and I am made like Jesus in every way.
