Father’s Day 2005, 2011, 2018
Scripture Reading
History of Father's Day
Fathers Day occurs on the 3rd Sunday in June. The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.
Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.
In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Roses are the Father's Day flowers.
1 Peter 2:21 NASB95
For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,
– Jesus is our example and today’s father needs to shepherd his family like Jesus shepherds his people.
– Jesus is our example and today’s father needs to shepherd his family like Jesus shepherds his people.

1. A Shepherd Knows Where He is Going ()

John 6:38 NASB95
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
He understands his place as a steward of what has been given to him and he submits himself to the Chief Shepherd’s will.
He understands his place as a steward of what has been given to him and he submits himself to the Chief Shepherd’s will.
The story is told of a young curate in the Church of England who was greatly helped in his understanding of the Scriptures by frequent conversations with an uneducated cobbler, who was, nevertheless, well acquainted with the Word of God.
On one occasion when a friend of his, a young theologian, was visiting him, he mentioned this remarkable knowledge of the Bible which the cobbler possessed. The young theologue, in a spirit of pride, expressed a desire to meet him, saying he felt sure he could ask some questions which he would be quite unable to answer. Upon being introduced to the man in his little shop, the question was put, “Can you tell me what Urim and the Thummin were?”
The cobbler replied, “I don’t know exactly; I understand that the words apply to something that was on the breastplate of the high priest. I know the words mean “Lights and Perfection,” and that through the Urim and Thummin the high priest was able to discern the mind of the Lord. But I find that I can get the mind of the Lord by just changing two letters. I take this blessed Book, and by “usin’ and thummin,” I get the mind of the Lord that way.”

2. A Shepherd Provides ()

Psalm 23:1 NASB95
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
A shepherd takes care of his flocks needs. Not always can he give them what they want but he always provides what they need. The sheep cannot provide their basic needs on their own. What do your sheep need? Food, Clothing, and Shelter at the most basic level, yes. But, there is more. They need a father’s attention, his love and his time as well as his protection, concern, training and even discipline when necessary.
4169 Reasons For Prisoners
Six hundred teenagers found in New England’s prisons gave these startling facts as to why they were there:
Six out of ten had fathers who drank to excess.
Many had mothers in the same condition.
Three out of four were permitted by parents to come and go as they pleased. No parental oversight.
Seven out of ten had homes where no group or family activities were enjoyed.
And for all of them, no family altar, no Sunday School attendance.
Children need a father to listen to them, to be at their games, plays, and recitals. Children have a basic need for input from their fathers and a good father/shepherd is able to make sure his sheep can say, “my dad is my shepherd under Jesus and I have need of nothing.”

3. A Shepherd Instructs ()

Psalm 23:1–3 NASB95
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
.
Deuteronomy 6:7 NASB95
“You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
4175 Strange Viewpoints Of Parents
Some parents are funny. They refuse to give a child the keys to the car because they feel he is not mature enough to make the proper decisions imperative to safe driving. Yet, they refuse to direct the religious life of the child because they say he should arrive at his own conclusions.

4. A Shepherd is Involved ()

John 10:14 NASB95
“I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,
How much do you know your children and how much do your children know you. .
How much do you know your children and how much do your children know you. .
Involved Dads
Proverbs 27:23 NASB95
Know well the condition of your flocks, And pay attention to your herds;
Involved Dads
According to Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, a father’s involvement with a child increases the child’s IQ, the child’s motivation to learn, and the child’s self-confidence. In addition, children with involved dads are more likely to develop a sense of humor as well as an “inner excitement.”
Victor Parachin, “The Fine Art of Good Fathering,” Herald of Holiness, February 1995, pp. 32-33.

5. A Shepherd is Diligent in his Responsibility ()

1 Peter 5:2 NASB95
shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;
I’ll Always be There for You!
It’s a fascinating story that comes out of the 1989 earthquake which almost flattened Armenia. This deadly tremor killed over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In the midst of all the confusion of the earthquake, a father rushed to his son’s school. When he arrived there he discovered the building was flat as a pancake.
Standing there looking at what was left of the school, the father remembered a promise he made to his son, “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” Tears began to fill his eyes. It looked like a hopeless situation, but he could not take his mind off his promise.
Remembering that his son’s classroom was in the back right corner of the building, the father rushed there and started digging through the rubble. As he was digging other grieving parents arrived, clutching their hearts, saying: “My son! “My daughter!” They tried to pull him off of what was left of the school saying: “It’s too late!” “They’re dead!” “You can’t help!” “Go home!” Even a police officer and a fire fighter told him he should go home. To everyone who tried to stop him he said, “Are you going to help me now?” They did not answer him and he continued digging for his son stone by stone.
He needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?” This man dug for eight hours and then twelve and then twenty-four and then thirty-six. Finally in the thirty-eighth hour, as he pulled back a boulder, he heard his son’s voice. He screamed his son’s name, “ARMAND!” and a voice answered him, “Dad?” It’s me Dad!” Then the boy added these priceless words, “I told the other kids not to worry. I told ‘em that if you were alive, you’d save me and when you saved me, they’d be saved. You promised that, Dad. ‘No matter what,’ you said, ‘I’ll always be there for you!’ And here you are Dad. You kept your promise!” Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, “Chicken Soup for the Soul.”

6. A Shepherd Leads by Example ()

1 Peter 2:21 NASB95
For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,
John 13:13–15 NASB95
“You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. “If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. “For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.
Philippians 2:5 NASB95
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,

1624 Three Hairs And Lost Influence
Bad Example: 1624 Three Hairs And Lost Influence
A strange dog came to a preacher’s house, and his three sons soon became quite fond of it. It so happened that there were three white hairs in the animal’s tail. One day an advertisement was seen in the newspaper about a lost dog which fitted that description perfectly. “In the presence of my three boys,” said the minister, “we carefully separated the three white hairs and removed them.” The real owner discovered where the straying canine had found a home and came to claim him. The dog showed every sign of recognition, so the man was ready to take him away.
Quickly the minister spoke up, “Didn’t you say the dog would be known by three white hairs in its tail?” The owner, unable to find the identifying feature, was forced to leave. The minister said later, “we kept the dog, but I lost my three boys for Christ.” His sons no longer had confidence in what their father professed. He hadn’t practiced what he preached.
Good Example — 4184 The Scudder Family
So far as we know, the Scudder family made a missionary record not made by any other family in history. “John Scudder and his wife were missionaries to Ceylon and India. Of their ten children who grew to adult life, one died while preparing for the Christian ministry, and nine became foreign missionaries, five being medical missionaries. In 1919, the year marking the centennial of Scudder influence in India, three great-grandchildren sailed for that land. Thirty-one descendants have worked in India, while seven others are missionaries elsewhere.”
This world needs courageous fathers who will shepherd their little flock as their first priority. It is a high calling because it is the backbone of a society. Men your little sheep need you. They need you to know where you are going, to provide for them, to instruct them, to be involved in their lives, to be diligent in your responsibility, and to lead by example. When you do your flock will bring you joy,
Proverbs 10:1 NASB95
The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish son is a grief to his mother.

Maybe you never had a father like this and you are wondering how you can be a father/shepherd without a good model. First, you must know the true Father/Shepherd. Know that God can be your Father if you will believe that He is who this book says that He is and that He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die on a cross for your failures, your father’s failures, all the way back to the father of all of us (Adam) who was the first to fail. But Jesus rose from the dead according to this book so that we might know the Father who created us and all living things and might have eternal life with him forever. The second thing you must do is pattern your life according to the book that God that Father gave to us. Learn of Him and you can be the father that your father should have been for He is a good Father who loves His children/sheep with and everlasting love.
Proverbs 23:24–25 NASB95
The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who sires a wise son will be glad in him. Let your father and your mother be glad, And let her rejoice who gave birth to you.
