Jairus Leader of the Synagogue

I want you to see what is happening here. First of all the leaders of the Synagogue did not believe that Jesus was the savior/right? Yet this man comes before Jesus and falls on his knees before him and pleads (earnestly). Does this sound familiar to anyone? For the past couple of weeks our sign out front said that if it gets too hard to stand kneel. This man comes to the savior to plead for the life of his daughter. You just now that he had to be the last resort, right. No good Pharisee worth his weight is coming to the Lord for healing, especially when the fellas at the office are all against him, right? He would be like, okay man I just have to bite the bullet on this one.
Besides he says his daughter is at the point of death. Have you ever thought maybe we should pray every day rather than wait until death is upon us.
And he went with him. Does this surprise anyone here today that the Lord went with him? Yet we do the same thing often, right.
Next we get a woman with a hemorrhage. Now some here may not agree with my assessment of this situation when I put it in the same category of the previous story but it is in the same passage.
First the passage admits that she has had this problem for twelve years. Secondly, she had suffered much under many physicians, and thirdly, she had spent all she had and was no better than before.
Yet she had heard-that Jesus was able to heal. Now what do we draw strength from? Obviously rumors. , (NRSV)
28 for she said, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.” Now she had heard reports-Jesus traveled around the country-side performing miracles. Not only did the blood flow dry up but she immediately felt her body healed. Now I have never had this issue in my life, and let me thank you right now Lord. But I can imagine that if a person had twelve years of bleeding and was suddenly healed they would notice the difference.
Even this woman wanted healing but wished to not be known. (NRSV)
33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. Do you all understand that Jesus knows the whole truth about you? Think about God asking Adam and Eve, (NRSV)
9 But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” Do you really think that God had know idea where they were? He wants us to tell him the truth. God already knew what had happened but he wanted Adam to talk to him and share the truth, not hide.
Remember the woman came with fear and trembling to reveal the truth, but perhaps she would have been okay if the Lord had not known, right? Can’t you just heal me without a commitment? Can’t you just save me already without me having to commit to a relationship?
(NRSV)
34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” Jesus is not about fear, fear comes from the sin within. The ruler was afraid to confront Jesus but a last resort to save his daughter brought him to his knees. The woman with the bleed hoped that in a crowd of people she could hide and reach out and touch him and be healed. (NRSV)
36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
What are you afraid of? When I was a kid I was always afraid of what others would think. As an adult I realized the power of others opinions. If you haven’t been to church you might be afraid that those who are always there will look poorly upon you.
Jesus told the ruler do not be afraid, do not fear, only believe. Now Jesus does in this passage much as he did with Lazarus, he waited until the child had passed before he raised her from the dead. It can be a bit confusing because he tells the crowd she is only sleeping.
(NRSV)
39 When he had entered, he said to them, “Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.”
(NRSV)
40 And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. This is the way the world looks in disbelief as the Master prepares to work. So notice he puts them outside.
Jesus then tells the little girl ARISE.
Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around. Have you ever thought of the death from this life as being asleep? Jesus is to come again to call up those who have gone before, first those who have gone to sleep in Christ.
(NRSV)
43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.
