Intro:
We won’t make it very far tonight, but for the next month I want us to go through the book of James. As we continue to grow as believers I believe James has a lot to say about us as Christians. I think sometimes we fall into the trap of believing we have arrived as Christians, but in all honesty we haven’t arrived until the Lord comes back and takes us away. Sometimes as Christians we believe that as we get to a certain age then we age out of ministering to people, but again that is not accurate and I believe as we dig into the book of James we will understand that we still have so far to go. Open your bibles to James Chapter 1. We will go verse by verse and look at what this means as a whole, but what is James actually saying.

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations:

Greetings.

Trials and Temptations

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Trials and Temptations

Have you ever wondered sometimes what is the end goal for my life? When I was younger I would ask myself what if questions and usually it was about God. What is God was calling me to do something crazy for him? Then I would wonder what does that even mean? What would that even look like? We are going to go through the book of James and as we look at it my goal is that we continue to grow in our relationship with God and no matter where we are at in our faith journey as we read through James my prayer is that God shows all of us areas we need to grow.
We won’t make it very far tonight, but for the next month I want us to go through the book of James. As we continue to grow as believers I believe James has a lot to say about us as Christians.

The Bible Guide Greetings (1:1)

James introduces himself as a Christian and a Jew. By saying he is a servant or slave of God, he is claiming to be a church leader. He also speaks of Jesus as Lord (the name of God) and Christ (the Jewish Messiah).

James writes to the ‘twelve tribes in the Dispersion’. The Jewish people had been scattered or ‘dispersed’ first by conquest and deportation and then by trade and business. Now the true Israel, the Christian church, is spread throughout the world by persecution and mission.

It is thought that this letter was written by James, the brother of Jesus. He is a much-respected leader of the church in Jerusalem. It is possible that he didn’t write this material as a letter, but that someone collected his sayings after his death. James was martyred on the orders of the Roman procurator Albinus in ad 62.

I won’t get stuck in the weeds as we look through the book of James, but I do want us to understand some things that we might overlook. So the question is which James wrote this book. The two James it could be is James the son of Zebedee. He is a fisherman who, with his brother john, is called to be a disciple. The other James is the brother of Jesus, who is mentioned in . It is James who is thought to be the author of this book. Here is what we know about James is a much-respected leader of the church in Jerusalem. Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.

3 Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

Holman Bible Handbook Greetings (1:1)

It is significant that James chose not to mention his relationship to Jesus. His statement that he was a servant of Jesus indicated his humility. The expression “twelve tribes” represented the children of Israel (Acts 26:7). The fact that they were “scattered” suggested they were Jews living outside their Palestinian homeland. James spoke to his readers as Christians, for only believers would see Jesus as the “Lord Jesus Christ.”

19 I saw none of the other apostles—only James, the Lord’s brother.

9 James, Cephas q and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised.

In a very brief snapshot this is who James a person who didn’t believe his own brother at one point, but then through time in the very beginning of James then calls himself a servant of Jesus. 7 This is the promise our twelve tribes are hoping to see fulfilled as they earnestly serve God day and night. King Agrippa, it is because of this hope that these Jews are accusing me.

Trials Develop Perseverance (1:2-4)
Here is the fact that they are scattered because of missions and because of Persecution. Here is a quick timeline of events that is happening around James. AD 31 Jesus is raised from the dead, AD 33 Paul is converted on the road to Damascus, AD 44 James the son of zebedee

Trials and Temptations
Greetings.
James identifies himself as “a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.” This immediately shows his humility as he might well have said, “the earthly brother of Jesus Christ.” But James knew it was his spiritual, not physical, relationship that counted. The few things we can say of James are:
Whenever you face trials. James is communication to all of us it’s not if we have trials, but it’s When we face trials. Now let’s be clear about trials I think there are times when we are having a bad day and we claim that we are facing trials.
James did not believe in Jesus as his Savior during his earthly life ().

5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

According to Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, James was martyred by being cast down from the pinnacle of the temple, and afterward—being still alive—was beaten to death, even while he prayed for his persecutors, interceding that “they know not what they do.”

These are probably not trials, but more having a bad day. There are days that just don’t go according to plan, but then there are trials that come to the surface of our lives. We might not be able to understand where it came from. Trials come our way and we are going to face them and we have to realize that. but as we face trials it’s possible to profit from our trials. We are not saying we have to pretend to be happy all the time, but the point is to look at our trials through a different lens through God’s lens.

In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

The New International Version. (2011). (). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
